In their final meet of the regular season, the USC men handily beat UNLV for the second time this year. The Trojans were nearly perfect, winning all but one event on the day.
The Rebels’ Bryson Huey, a graduate student and the 2024 Western Athletic Conference Champion in the 50 free, prevented a complete Trojan sweep by winning the 50 in 19.80. His best time stands at 19.02, which he set at the Minnesota Invite back in December. Huey added another 4 points to the Rebels’ total with a 2nd place finish in the 100 free (44.74), and also contributed to UNLV’s 200 medley relay with a 19.01 anchor leg.
While the Trojans won both relays, it was not without some drama. They kicked off meet with a 1:25.54 in the 200 medley relay thanks to the efforts of Michal Chmielewski (21.87), Junhao Chan (23.72), Jan Bialecki (20.70), and Oliver Sogaard-Andersen (19.25). Chmielewski and Sogaard-Andersen returned in the 400 free relay with Vaggelis Makrygiannis and Ian Pickles to initially take the win, but were ultimately disqualified. That meant that USC’s ‘B’ team of Bialecki, Raphael Sibuet, Cole Ballard, and Derek Zhang were victorious in 2:57.66.
USC had numerous double-winners, including Thomas Olsen who swept the distance events. First, he won the 1000 free in a time of 9:08.38—a new personal best that shaved 0.31 seconds off the 9:08.69 he swam against California. He went on to win the 500 free with a 4:26.79, just over 3 seconds off his best but quick enough to dominate the field by over 2 seconds.
Vaggelis Makrygiannis, a silver medalist at the 2024 European Championships, won the 200 free (1:35.39) to set a new PB by 0.40. Makrygiannis also won the 200 back in 1:42.67, though he has already been as fast as 1:40.54, a time he swam against Stanford just last month.
Sophomore Junhao Chan, a Singapore native, swept the breaststrokes with times of 52.39 and 1:54.45 in the 100/200. Chan’s bests sit at 51.53 and 1:52.60, which were set at NCAAs last year to finish 18th and 22nd in prelims, respectively.
The final double event winner was junior Michal Chmielewski, who took home wins in the 100 back (46.43) and 100 fly (46.14). His best times in those events, which are 45.63 and 45.08 respectively, were set this season; the former was done at from the Texas Hall of Fame Invitational and the latter comes from USC’s dual against California last month.
Notably, Krzysztof Chmielewski—the Trojans’ highest scoring swimmer at NCAAs last year—did not compete.
Other event winners:
- 200 IM: Filip Mujan (USC) – 1:49.31
- 200 Fly: Charlie Bufton (USC) – 1:43.78
- 100 Free: Oliver Sogaard-Andersen (USC)- 42.90
The UNLV men, who finished their season 1-8, are set to compete at the MPSF Championships from February 25-28. This year marks a return to the MPSF Championships after leaving the conference in 2013, and is the result of the Western Athletic Conference ending their sponsorship of men’s swim and dive last season.
The Trojans end their season with a 4-5 record (0-1 Big Ten), with their sole conference loss to the #3 ranked Indiana Hoosiers. They’ll head to Madison, Wisconsin from February 18-21 for the Big Ten Championships, where they finished 4th in their debut last year.
