(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women’s swimming and diving team competed at the two-day Western Pennsylvanian Invitational on Friday, January 23, and Saturday, January 24, while celebrating the seniors at home.

Top Performances

  • Sophomore Alexandra Scharpf had four top-three finishes, touching first in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:41.89, second in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:07.57, third in the 200-yard IM in 2:10.15, and third in the 400-yard IM in 4:39.63. Her times in the 1,650-yard freestyle and 200-yard IM are season bests.
  • Senior Savannah Xu was a triple winner for the meet, taking first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.22, the 100-yard butterfly in 57.07, and the 50-yard freestyle in 24.46.
  • Freshman Chloe Mihaly took first place with a time of 1:55.43 in the 200-yard freestyle and finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:11.11. She was also third in the 100-yard freestyle in 52.82.
  • Freshman Madison Assanah won the 100-yard backstroke in 57.80 and placed third in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:08.50.
  • Sophomore Olivia Giuffre placed second in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.08.
  • Sophomore Yuchen Zhou was third in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.09 and fourth in 200-yard backstroke in 2:09.14.
  • Following Xu in the 100-yard butterfly was freshman Natalie Sierzanowski in second in 58.15 and junior Catrina Raich in third in 58.57. Senior Izzy Miller was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.92.
  • Senior Sophie Elliott finished the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:58.66 to place second.

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University swimming and diving team traveled across town Friday evening to open competition at the Western PA Invite, hosted by Carnegie Mellon.

The Dukes totaled 416 points across eight women’s events, placing second in the team standings. Host Carnegie Mellon leads the field with 600 points, while Grove City College sits in third with 259.5. Duquesne collected eight medals on the opening day of competition, including five gold finishes.

The 200 freestyle relay opened the meet, as the team of sophomores Sierra Sown, Kaitlyn ConnorsRachel Howard, and freshman Lucy Backus captured first place with a time of 1:36.40.

The Dukes followed with a strong showing in the 200 IM, placing four swimmers in the top five. Senior Sydney Severini claimed gold with a time of 2:05.89, while Snow finished second after touching the wall at 2:08.63. Sophomore Jess Burns placed fourth in 2:10.24, and Connors rounded out the top five with a time of 2:13.09.

Sophomore Ashley Freel added another top finish for Duquesne in the 200-yard backstroke, winning the event with a time of 2:02.51. Severini earned a fifth-place finish at 2:09.73. Freel continued her standout performance in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall at 52.64 to secure first place. Backus followed closely behind to take silver with a time of 52.74.

In the 500-yard freestyle, freshman Norah Kotnik placed sixth with a time of 5:18.66, while classmate Emily Kyre finished eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke after touching the wall at 1:08.14.

The 400-yard medley relay closed out Friday night’s competition, with Duquesne claiming the top two spots. The quartet of Sown, Burns, Howard, and Connors captured gold with a time of 3:51.60, while Kotnik, sophomore Surrena Luna, Freel, and Backus secured silver in 3:55.47.

Duquesne returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 24, traveling to West Virginia for a tri-meet against the Mountaineers and Villanova. Competition is set to begin at 11 a.m.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Grove City College men’s swimming and diving team won seven events Friday and Saturday at the unscored Carnegie Mellon Western Pennsylvania Invitational. Grove City highlighted the weekend by winning three of the four relay events held at the two-day event.

Grove City opened the meet by winning the 200 free relay in a time of 1 minute, 23.97 seconds. Junior Owen Hancock (Brunswick, Ohio/Westside Christian), freshman George Witte (Columbia, S.C./Covenant Classical Christian), senior Nathan Beukema (Kensington, Md./Homeschooled) and senior Caleb Einolf (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) combined for the relay victory.

Hancock, Einolf, Beukema and junior Bryce Pope (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Valley Classical) teamed to win the 400 medley relay Friday night with a time of 3:25.09. That foursome then opened Saturday’s session by winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:31.03.

Witte added wins in both the 200 backstroke (1:56.05) and 200 free (1:43.02). Einolf won the 100 breaststroke in a pool-record time of 54.69 seconds while Hancock captured the 100 butterfly in a time of 49.95 seconds.

Einolf added two runner-up finishes. He placed second in the 50 free (20.60) and 100 butterfly (50.01). Beukema, Hancock, Einolf and Witte finished second in the meet-ending 400 free relay after recording a time of 3:05.55.

Freshman Patrick Cratty (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) took second in the 200 free (1:47.11). Freshman Connor Morgan (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) earned second in the 1650 with a time of 17:20.26. He finished one spot ahead of senior Sam Thayer (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson), who posted a time of 17:55.72.

Hancock also finished third in the 100 free with a time of 47.39 seconds. Senior Logan Myers (Middleburg, Fla./Homeschooled) finished third in the 400 individual medley (4:14.23) while sophomore Aidan McCarthy (Knoxville, Tenn./Christian Academy of Knoxville) took third in the 200 free (1:47.73) to join Witte and Cratty in a 1-2-3 Grove City sweep.

The Wolverines return to dual meet action next Friday at 6 p.m. when Grove City hosts Calvin in non-conference action.
