Swim Team Coach

 

MISSION:

To provide safe, positive, and developmentally appropriate swim instruction for age group athletes while fostering a strong foundation in technique, work ethic, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The Age Group Swim Coach plays a critical role in developing young swimmers’ skills, confidence, and long-term love for the sport, while upholding the values, standards, and expectations set forth by the Aquatics Department and The Claremont Club.

Head Coach and Assistant Head Coach

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Athlete Development & Coaching

  • Plan and conduct engaging, age-appropriate swim practices that emphasize proper stroke mechanics, starts, turns, streamlines, and basic race skills.
  • Focus on long-term athlete development, prioritizing technique, skill acquisition, consistency, and enjoyment over short-term performance results.
  • Create structured practices that balance instruction, repetition, conditioning, and fun.
  • Provide clear demonstrations, feedback, and corrections tailored to each swimmer’s learning style and developmental stage.
  • Ensure swimmer safety at all times by maintaining appropriate supervision, awareness, and pool organization.

Athlete Experience & Motivation

  • Foster a positive, encouraging, and inclusive team culture where athletes feel valued, supported, and motivated.
  • Use swimmers’ names consistently, maintain eye contact, and communicate with patience, enthusiasm, and respect.
  • Build confidence in young athletes by setting achievable goals and celebrating effort, improvement, and sportsmanship.
  • Encourage participation in swim meets while helping athletes understand race fundamentals, rules, and expectations.

Parent Communication & Relationship Building

  • Serve as a professional and approachable point of contact for parents regarding swimmer development, group expectations, and practice structure.
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with parents, escalating concerns or questions to senior coaching staff when appropriate.
  • Support a sense of community and belonging within the swim team and broader club membership.

Competition & Team Support

  • Attend assigned swim meets to coach athletes on deck, ensuring a positive and educational competition experience.
  • Assist swimmers with meet preparation, including warm-ups, race strategy basics, and post-race feedback.
  • Be available to substitute coach for other groups when possible and assist with team-wide activities or events.

Professionalism & Club Standards

  • Arrive early to practices to prepare workouts, equipment, and lane organization; remain after practice to engage with swimmers and parents as needed.
  • Know, follow, and enforce all club, aquatics department, and team policies and procedures.
  • Maintain required certifications (CPR, First Aid, Lifeguard and/or Coaching Certifications as applicable) and participate in continuing education.
  • Ensure all lifesaving and safety equipment is readily available and understood.
  • Represent The Claremont Club in a professional, positive, and supportive manner at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Aquatics Director, Head Coach, or Assistant Head Coach.

  • Greet members and guests with a positive, professional demeanor.
  • Demonstrate a friendly, approachable attitude while on deck and throughout the facility.
  • Be a team player by assisting fellow coaches and staff whenever possible.
  • Show genuine care and concern for swimmers, families, and colleagues.

ATTENDANCE & SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS

  • Arrive to work on time and prepared.
  • Maintain consistent availability according to the assigned schedule.
  • Flexibility to work weekday afternoons/evenings and weekends, including swim meets.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to read, speak, hear, and see effectively.
  • Ability to demonstrate all competitive strokes, starts, and turns.
  • Maintain sufficient cardiovascular fitness to actively coach on deck for the duration of practices and competitions without becoming out of breath.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all required certifications.
