The Canisius women’s swimming and diving team recorded a 174-126 victory over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Rider in collegiate swimming and diving action Saturday at the Burt Flickinger Center in downtown Buffalo.
The Broncs earned a split of the dual meet, fashioning a 204-90 victory over the Golden Griffin men.
For the Canisius women, the relay quartet of junior Evie Leighton and Cassandra Ercoli, sophomore Daphne Mead and senior Emily Blake got the meet started on the right foot as they posted a win in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:49.03.
Mead also claimed a trio of first-place finishes, taking the top spot in the 200 fly (2:12.24), the 200 back (2:09.00) and the 200 IM (2:11.77) individual races.
Leighton swept both the women’s 100 and 200 free, recording a time of 54.16 in the 100 while touching the wall in 1:58.77 in the 200. Leighton also swam the anchor leg of the women’s 400 free relay that rallied in the final leg of the race to take first with a time of 3:43.11.
Junior Cassandra Ercoli placed first in the 100 breast (1:09.39), highlighting a 1-2-3 finish for the Griffs that saw senior Tori Spacciapolli place second (1:11.51) and senior Peyton Koukides claim third (1:13.60).
Freshman Lacee Williams placed first in the women’s 3-meter diving competition, posting a finals score of 188.85.
Senior Toby Mayfield paced the Canisius men, claiming first place in the 200 fly (1:56.31) and posting a pair of second place finishes in the 100 fly (51.77) and 200 IM (2:00.12) races.
Junior Atticus Hlubin and sophomore Giovanni Poggio gave the Griffs a 2-3 finish in the 200 breast, with Hlubin placing second (2:13.33) and Poggio taking third (2:15.54).
Senior Sam Vidal and junior Luke Critchlow fashioned a 2-3 result for Canisius in the 500 free as Critchlow claimed second (4:55.07) and Vidal took third (4:57.65).
The quartet of sophomore Elijah Nevins, junior Tom McCabe, sophomore Cameron Upchurch and Vidal placed second in the men’s 400 free relay with a time of 3:13.34.

Canisius returns to action Jan. 17 when it travels to Lewiston, N.Y. for a dual meet against Battle of the Bridge foe Niagara. Start time for the meet is slated for noon.

BUFFALO, NY – The Rider University women’s swimming and diving team was defeated in its return to action out of the winter break Saturday morning, falling at Canisius 174-126. The Broncs fall to 2-4 and 2-3 in MAAC meets, while the Golden Griffins improve to 1-6 and 1-2 in MAAC meets.
The Broncs won six events in the meet.
Casey McLaughlin (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) got the Broncs started with a win in the 1,000-free, swimming 10:59.52 for the victory, then later won the 500-free with a time of 5:20.80.
The Broncs got a one-two finish in the 100-back with Casey Morgan (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) and Chas Ruatos (Lodi, NJ/Immaculate Conception) touching the wall at 59.80 and 1:01.44.
Sonya Mishakova (Bali, Indonesia/Australian Independent School Bali) and Donja Tripp (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame) swam one-two in the 50-free with times of 25.18 and 25.21.
In the diving well, Campbell Dopler (Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf) and Adriana Raymond (Southington, CT/St. Paul Catholic) took the top two spots on the 1-meter with scores of 214.80 and 184.13.
Rachel Hutchins (Elkridge, MD/Annapolis Area Christian School) claimed the win in the 100-fly with a time of 1:01.96.

– Lea Opdyke (Ocala, FL/West Port) and Mishakova finished two-three in the 200-free.
– Megan Smith (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) was third in the 200-fly and the 500-free.

Rider returns to the pool Tuesday, hosting Fordham in the final home meet of the season with diving at 3:50 p.m. and swimming at 6:00 p.m.
Rider won 15 events in the meet.
To open the meet, Sebastian Canosa (Morristown, NJ/Morristown), Maxwell Connelly (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon), Nelson Paraison (Newark, NJ/Hackensack), and Max Manolache (Knoxville, TN/McCallie School) combined to swim 1:34.73 to win the 200-medley relay.
Luke Mesco (Mullica Hill, NJ/Mother of Divine Grace) and Filippo Sala (Davie, FL/Nova Southeastern University School) swam one-two in the 1,000-free, stopping the clock at 10:14.17 and 10:19.51. Mesco later won the 500-free with a time of 4:53.41.
In the 200-free, Ethan Rogowski (Waterford, NY/Shenendehowa) and Dawid Turos (Riverwoods, IL/Deerfield) finished one-two, touching the wall at 1:44.29 and 1:44.52. The duo also swam one-two in the 50-free with times of 21.75 and 21.90. The pair then flipped places in the 100-free with Turos winning in 47.11 and Rogowski taking second 48.22.
Rider swept the 100-back with Canosa, Riley Rowan (Simpsonville, SC/Clonlara), and Zach McKatten (West Milford, NJ/Passaic County Technical Vocational School) finishing in 51.76, 52.87, and 54.03.
In the 100-breast, Connelly and Matthew Borovik (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) finished one-two, stopping the clock at 57.58 and 59.24. Connelly later won the 200-breast with a time of 2:08.56.
On the 1-meter, Steven Figueroa (Whittier, CA/La Serna) and Stavros Xantheas (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) finished one-two, scoring 232.35 and 229.05. The pair also finished one-two on the 3-meter with scores of 253.20 and 194.70.
In the 200-back, Joey Milhomens (Wolcott, CT/Wolcott) swam one-two with Canosa, touching the wall at 1:55.90 and 1:58.94. Milhomens won the 200-IM with a time of 2:00.12.
Tivon Benjamin (Palm Bay, FL/St. Anthony’s Secondary School) took the 100-fly with a time of 51.53.
The Broncs closed out the meet with Turos, Rogowski, Benjamin, and Mesco combining for a swim of 3:10.92 in the 400-free relay.
