Scoring Out NCAAs After Midseason Invites: Men’s Edition

Now that the midseason invitational meets have wrapped up in the NCAA, it’s time for a pre-Christmas check-in to see how things stand as we prepare for the winter semester and a fast and furious few months to kick off 2026 before the real show begins in March.

Below, we’ve outlined how a theoretical Men’s NCAA Championship would be scored based on times produced so far this season, without diving, using data from the Swimulator, which you can find here.

Note that the Swimulator scores out a meet as if it were a timed final (unless there’s a tie for 16th). If two swimmers tie for 8th, they’ll both get 10 points when, in reality, there would be a swim-off to see who would go to the ‘A’ final and get a minimum of 11, and who would be relegated to the consols and get a maximum of nine. In cases where swimmers tie for 16th, the Swimulator awards them both one point (rather than each getting half), when in reality, there would be a swim-off to see who would head to the ‘B’ final to earn that point (or more).

It’s also important to note that the Swimulator auto selects the three optimal events for each swimmer, and that may not be what they end up swimming at the actual meet.

Despite having their top swimmer, Hubert Kos, sitting out of collegiate competition for the fall semester, the defending champion Texas men still sit atop the standings at the midpoint of the NCAA season with 468 points, nearly the exact same number they scored at the 2025 NCAAs (463 excluding diving).

Kos scored the maximum 60 points last season, and will presumably do so again after setting SCM world records in the backstroke events at the World Cup in October. Adding him to their current roster is a scary prospect, making the Longhorns look like an unstoppable force heading into March.

In the midseason Swimulator rankings, Texas has six swimmers scoring 36 individual points or more, not including Kos or Rex Maurer, who scored 57 points last season but hasn’t hit top form yet in 2025-26 (or raced the 1650 free).

Leading the way for the Longhorns is newcomer Baylor Nelson, a transfer from Texas A&M, who has the top time in the nation in the 200 and 400 IM and also sits 5th in the 200 breast.

Arizona State, which fell to 6th last season after winning the 2024 national title, rockets up to 2nd in the standings at the midpoint of the season, thanks in part to phenomenal relays–they’re projected to score 172 points in relays, more than any other school, despite their 800 free relay time coming from a tri-meet earlier in the season. (The other schools that attended the CSCAA Dual Meet Challenge, Tennessee, Virginia and Michigan, have not raced the 800 free relay.)

They’ve also got Ilya Kharun leading the way with 55.5 points, while newcomers Rémi FabianiAdam Chaney and JT Ewing are the next three highest scorers for the team and have slotted in seamlessly with the Sun Devils.

Looking at the 2025 NCAA standings, Cal, Indiana, Florida and Tennessee finished 2nd through 5th behind Texas, and in the midseason rankings, Indiana once again sits up in 3rd (without factoring in their diving prowess) with a well-rounded roster boosted by a strong freshman class.

Florida sits back in 6th, with only three swimmers, Josh LiendoAhmed Jaouadi and Jonny Marshall, scoring points individually based on the current rankings, a big downturn after they had eight swimmers score at NCAAs last season.

Cal and Tennessee were expected to drop off with some major losses in the offseason, and that shows here with the Bears sitting 7th and the Vols in 11th.

Rising up to 4th in the midseason standings is Georgia, which finished 7th last year but has had big contributions from Luca UrlandoRuard van RenenDrew Hitchcock and Tomas Koski so far this season, and perhaps most importantly, they’ve got 134 relay points compared to the 92 they scored at the 2025 NCAAs.

The most surprising school cracking the top 10 is Florida State, a team that finished 18th at NCAAs last season but has three swimmers positioned to score double-digit points this season, led by Logan Robinson, and they’ve also got 100 relay points, more than double their total from the 2025 NCAAs (42).

JT Ewing having a great season is awesome to see, robbed of an NCAA roster spot when he was poised to score at NCS

Good on NU for getting some points on the board! I know last season was a little lackluster but they are really turning those guys around this year.
