18-year-old Martine Damborg came from behind to win the women’s 100 butterfly final at the 2025 European Short Course Championships in a European Junior Record time of 55.52. She defeated the Netherlands’ Tessa Giele (55.55), and Sweden’s Louise Hansson (55.69) to complete her sweep of the sprint butterfly events.

Damborg was sixth at the 25, fifth at the 50, and moved into third with a lap remaining before using a strong finish to take the win with the fastest final 25 in the field. She split 25.98/29.54 by 50s.

The result was an upset on paper, as Giele and Hansson have both been sub-55 in their careers, ranking as the fifth and seventh fastest performers of all time, respectively. Coming into tonight, Damborg’s best time was 56.40, a time she produced at a local meet in October 2024.

She now ranks #6 in the world for the 2025-26 season and sits as the 26th-fastest performer in the event’s history.

Damborg still has a ways to go to beat the Danish Record, which remains at the 55.10 retired Olympian Jeanette Ottesen logged at the 2015 Duel in the Pool.

Earlier in the meet, Damborg threw down a European Junior Record of 24.61 to win the 50 fly, touched eighth in the 100 IM (58.89), helped Denmark to fourth in the 4×50 mixed medley relay and fifth in the mixed 4×50 free relay.

The 50 fly time eclipsed Ottesen‘s long-standing 24.71 National Record from the 2014 Short Course World Championships and undercut the 25.06 European Junior Record Damborg set during yesterday’s semifinals, which itself improved the 25.20 she produced to break her previous record by 0.01 in the heats.

Damborg holds two additional Danish Records: the SCM 200 free (1:54.82) and 100 IM (58.17).

She broke onto the international scene last summer at the European Junior Championships in Slovakia, racking up four individual medals, including gold in the 50m freestyle and 100m fly as well as silvers in the 50m back and 50m fly.

At the World Junior Championships in September, she earned bronze in the 50 fly and finished sixth in the 50 free and eighth in the 100 fly 10th 100 free.

Later this week, she’s slated to swim the 50 back (8th seed) and 50 free (16th seed).
