2027 “Best of the Rest” Distance Freestyler Allen Gyang Verbally Commits to Michigan

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Allen Gyang from Sandpipers of Nevada in Las Vegas, Nevada, has announced his intention to swim and study at the University of Michigan beginning in 2027-28.

“It brings me great honor to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Michigan, where I will be continuing my academic and athletic career as a Wolverine!
I’d like to give a huge thank you to Coaches Casey, Forrest, Abbey, Jake, and Ron for their incredible support and guidance throughout my swimming journey.
To my parents, siblings, friends, teammates, and relatives. Thank you for your endless support, encouragement, and sacrifices that made this dream possible.
A special thank you as well to Coaches Matt, Aaron and the Michigan swimming staff and community for their warmth and belief in me, and for helping turn this dream into reality.
GO BLUE! 🔥〽️🇺🇸〽️🔥”

We named Gyang one of the “Best of the Rest” distance freestyle recruits on the Way Too Early list of top boys’ swimmers in the high school class of 2027, but his range extends into the sprint zone as well. He has Summer Nationals cuts in the 100/200 free, Summer Juniors cuts in the 50/500 free, 100 fly, and 200/400 IM, and Winter Juniors cuts in the 1000 free and 200 fly.

Gyang is coming off a strong summer that saw him improve his LCM times by 11.8 seconds in the 800 free, over 9 in the 200 back (he hadn’t swum the event since 2023), 7.9 in the 200 breast, 4.6 in the 400 IM, 2.9 in the 100 breast (since 2023), 1.6 in the 200 fly, and .7 in the 100 fly. He wrapped up the season at NCSA Summer Championships, where he placed 9th in the 50 free (23.31, PB), 9th in the 100 free (51.07, PB), 4th in the 200 free (1:51.82, PB), 18th in the 50 fly (25.64, PB), 17th in the 100 fly (55.16, PB), and 25th in the 400 IM (4:29.19, PB).

In the 2024-25 short-course season, he had strong performances at the CA/NV Sectionals in December and Justin Sectionals in March. At the former, he finished 3rd in the 50 free, 10th in the 100 free, 2nd in the 200 free, 9th in the 500 free, 10th in the 100 fly, and 8th in the 200 IM, and took home PBs in the 200/500 free. In Justin, he was 3rd in the 100 free, 6th in the 200 free, 17th in the 200 fly, and 6th in the 200 IM. He lowered his 100 free PB and added a new lifetime best in the 200 fly.

Gyang is just the lastest in a string of Sandpipers who have made their way to Ann Arbor; he will follow teammates Bella Sims and Rebecca Diaconescu in the desert-to-Great-Lakes migration.

Also committed to the Wolverines for 2027-28 are #16 Anthony Dornoff, Boone Wilcox, Ben Luginski, and Charles Howard.

Having watched this kid since he was an 8 & under, I feel like he might end up being a “distance swimmer” like Bowe Becker and Ilya Kharun were out of Sandpipers.
