Tessa Broedell has made a verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Miami, beginning in the fall of 2027. Broedell confirmed the decision on Instagram, writing:
I’m SO excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at The University of Miami! I’d like to start off by thanking my amazing parents. Thank you for constantly waking up with me and always reminding me that I can do anything. None of this would be possible without you guys. I couldn’t thank you enough. Next, I want to thank my family at NPB. Thank you for always pushing me to be the best inside and outside of the pool. Honorable mention to Coach Alf. You’re a real one! Thank you to all the coaches at Miami. Can’t wait to represent the U! GOOOO CANESSSSS!

The future Hurricane is from Jupiter, Florida, where she attends Kings Academy and trains year-round with North Palm Beach Swim Club. She’s a breaststroke specialist who’s slightly better at the 100, with the 200 IM representing her third-best event.
Broedell didn’t set any new bests during the 2024–25 season, holding steady with the 1:04.43 she posted at the 33rd Speedo Winter Championships in 2023. Her 200 breast best of 2:19.53 also dates back to March 2023, when she won the 13–14 Florida Age Group State title.
Early into the 2025–26 season, however, she’s been on a tear, already lowering her best in the 100 breast three separate times. At the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) District 6 Championships in mid-October, she clocked 1:04.26, then broke the 1:04 barrier at the Region 2 Championships with a 1:03.88, before logging a new best of 1:03.65 at the State Championships this past weekend. While the 200 breast isn’t contested at high school meets, it’s safe to say her best in that event could be in danger in the coming months.
Her 1:03.65 in the 100 breast earned her fifth place at State — a big jump from her 14th-place finish last year, after placing eighth as a freshman.
The Miami women, led by head coach Andy Kershaw, placed 10th out of 15 teams at the 2025 ACC Championships and went on to finish 13th at the NCAA Championships. The team scored 75.5 points at NCAAs, with Giulia Oliveira Carvalho contributing 6.5 in the pool and the divers accounting for the remaining 69.
At last season’s ACC Championships, where ‘A,’ ‘B,’ and ‘C’ finals were scored, it took times of 1:02.13 (100 breast), 2:13.21 (200 breast), and 1:58.69 (200 IM) to score in Broedell’s primary events.
Based on her current times, Broedell would have ranked third in the 200 breast, fourth in the 100 breast, and fifth in the 200 IM on the team’s 2024–25 depth chart. All of Miami’s top breaststrokers will have graduated by the time she arrives on campus, so she and fellow incoming recruit Reagan Uhlik (1:04.81/2:15.11) should have an immediate opportunity to make an impact. In the 200 IM, she will have one year to train alongside Marissa Inouye, who led the team at 2:01.63 last season.
Joining Broedell and Uhlik in committing to the Mustangs as members of the class of 2031 are Madison Schmitz and Heidi Stoute.
