Southern Illinois Sweeps Events on Night One of A3 Performance Invite

Day one of the SIU performance invite saw Southern Illinois sweep the events, taking the top spot in all three individual event and both relays for both men and women.

Women’s Recap

The Saluki women’s team started the meet with the top time in the 200 free relay of 1:31.41 which they swam with the team of Susana Gabriela Hernandez Barradas (23.17), Zaria Terry (22.68), Ava Rines (22.81), and Masha Zhukova (22.75). They came in more than two-and-a-half seconds ahead of Nebraska-Omaha’s 1:34.09.

The quartet went on to take the top four spots in the individual 50 as well. Terry won the event in 23.00, Gabriela Hernandez Barradas finished 2nd in 23.06, Zhukova was 3rd in 23.51, and Rines was 4th in 23.59. All four swims were new season best times.

Gabriela Hernandez Barradas and Terry also swam on their winning 400 medley relay to close the session. Liseska Gallegos Gutierrez led off in 54.55 on the backstroke, off her season best of 53.90 from SIU’s meet with Northwestern and Miami at the beginning of October.

Olivia Herron swam the breaststroke in 1:00.35. Terry was on fly in 55.66, and Gabriela Hernandez Barradas swam the free in 51.18. The team finished in 3:41.74 to win by more than seven seconds over Evansville’s 3:49.01.

Herron also won the 200 IM in 1:58.11 to be the only swimmer under 2:00 in the event. This was a new season best for her, and was only about a second-and-a-half off her lifetime best of 1:56.46 from last season’s NCAA Championships.

Southern Illinois also took the 2nd and 3rd place finishes in the event with Brooklyn Anderson (2:01.82) and Liseska Gallegos Gutierrez (2:02.29).

The 500 free was won by Saluki freshman Livia Munkacsi-Nagy, who touched in a new personal best 4:52.59. She was the only swimmer under 5:00 with SIU senior Karen Rodriguez finishing 2nd in 5:02.24.

Men’s Recap

The SIU men won a far closer 200 free relay, swimming 1:19.18 to touch less than a second ahead of Nebraska-Omaha’s 1:20.14. Benedek Andor led off in 20.25. Alex Cimerra was 2nd in 19.80, Carter Ruthven swam 19.59 in 3rd, and Willem Huggins was 19.54 as the anchor.

Huggins and Ruthven finished 1st and 2nd in the 50 with Huggins touching in 20.31 and Ruthven swimming 20.44. Huggins set a new season best while Ruthven, a Kentucky transfer, dropped four hundredths from his lifetime best of 20.48 from last year’s SEC Championships.

The two men picked up their 3rd gold medals of the evening on the 400 medley relay. Huggins led off, swimming 48.09 on the backstroke and Ruthven swam the fly in 47.01. Tiago Faleiros split 53.33 on the breaststroke and Benedek Andor brought the team home in 44.39 on the freestyle to touch in 3:12.82, finishing more than two seconds ahead of Nebraska Omaha’s 3:15.36.

Andor also won three gold medals with his 200 IM of 1:46.65 coming in more than two seconds ahead of teammate Juraj Barcot‘s 1:49.19. His swim was a new season best time, but was just over a second off his lifetime best of 1:45.32 from the Mid-American Championships in March of 2024.

The Salukis also took the top two spots in the men’s 500 free with junior Tomas Peciar winning the 500 free in 4:25.78. This was a new lifetime best by a second-and-a-half, dropping from the 4:27.27 he swam in March of 2024. Joshua Aceves Gomez finished 2nd in 4:31.10, just ahead of Kyle Kulow‘s 4:31.37 for Omaha.
