Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Arizona State University recently landed a “Best of the Rest” backstroker in Ben Jaggers for the 2027-2028 school year.

Jaggers, a Texan who competes for Waterloo Swimming and attends Anderson High School in Austin, announced his verbal commitment to SwimSwam:

“I’m extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Arizona State University! I would like to thank my family, coaches, and friends for pushing me and supporting me throughout this process. Special thanks to Coach Will for believing in me and always motivating me to be the best version of myself. I would also like to thank Coach Herbie and the staff at ASU for giving me the opportunity to be a sun devil. Forks up!

One of Jaggers’ career highlights thus far was his performance at the 2025 Speedo Sectionals in Justin. There, he emerged as the sectionals champion in the 100 back, clocking a 47.96 as the lone sub-48.5 swimmer. Jaggers added a 4th place finish in the 200 backstroke, also in lifetime-best fashion of 1:47.79.

This summer, he added the title “national age group record holder” to his resume by leading off Waterloo’s 15-16 long course 200 medley relay. His 50 back split was a 26.16, contributing to the boys’ final time of 1:44.53, the fastest in history for their age group.

Jaggers’ Best SCY Times

  • 100 back — 47.96
  • 200 back — 1:47.79
  • 50 back — 22.35
  • 100 free — 46.48
  • 50 free — 21.13

Upon arrival in Tempe, Jaggers should have no shortage of elite backstroke training partners. The Sun Devils have a strong recent history in the discipline, with Olympic gold medalist Hubi Kos holding the 100 and 200 team records. Though Kos transferred to Texas, another high profile backstroker has transferred in:  U.S. Open Record holder Adam Chaney. In his first fall with the team, Chaney already became the program’s 4th fastest 100 backstroker ever (44.49).

On the conference level, Sun Devils handily won their most recent Big 12 Championship. Jaggers’ current times in the 100 and 200 backstroke are already good enough for the B and C finals, respectively, in the conference. To make it to NCAA level or to lead off the Sun Devils’ medley relay, Jaggers will have to shave more time in the next two years before he steps on campus. More improvement seems likely given his recent trajectory.

Joining Jaggers in ASU’s Class of 2031 are butterfliers Gavin Halusic and Aidan Collins, sprint breaststroker Thor Johannessen, and freestyler Harrison Tater.
