Buffalo Bests MAC Foe Toledo To Improve To 3-1 On Season

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo swimming and diving program continued its season at home on Saturday, hosting Toledo in the team’s third meet of the season. The Bulls defeated the Rockets, 179-121, improving to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference matchups.

IN THE POOL

The Bulls opened the meet with momentum, winning the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Vivian RoyPinar DonmezNicole Aguilar and Bella Forsman finished the event in 1:45.28 to take first place. The Bulls also secured a third-place finish in the event, with Hattie WasmuthAva PaulyMaddy Schnelzer and Amanda Jurgelon finishing the relay in 1:47.80.

Elise McCaul continued the Bulls’ momentum with her first event win of the day, the 1,000-yard freestyle. The senior’s time of 10:30.16 secured first place and nine points for the Bulls. Karen Austin trailed to take fourth and earn two more points for the Bulls with a time of 10:51.09. McCaul also later earned first place in the 500-yard freestyle too, posting a time of 5:06.92. Ava Cunningham trailed to take fourth with a time of 5:15.45 to secure two more points for the Bulls.

Abbey Gardner (2nd, 1:55.37) and Jurgelon (4th, 1:58.75) combined to earn six points for the Bulls in the 200-yard freestyle. Wasmuth (3rd, 59.59) and Roy (4th, 59.65) followed in the 100-yard backstroke, earning top four finishes and five more points for the program.

Donmez won the 100-yard breaststroke for the Bulls, taking first place with a time of 1:04.81. Grace Rider trailed closely, placing second with a time of 1:05.70 to secure the top two spots for the Bulls and 13 points. Madi Tewksbury also earned fourth place with a time of 1:08.49.

Donmez later won the 200-yard breaststroke too, posting a time of 2:20.31 to secure nine more points. Pauly followed to take second with a time of 2:22.90, adding four points. Rider earned fourth (2:26.42). Donmez has now placed inside the top three in eight individual events through three meets.

Forsman continued her momentum from the Bulls’ first two meets, winning the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.22. Kamilla Nemes earned second (2:07.56), with Schnelzer also trailing to secure third (2:12.02). The Bulls earned 16 of the 19 available points in the event.

Forsman later added an event win in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.61. The time was a new event personal best for the sophomore and just over a second shy of reaching the program’s all-time top 10 (55.32). Nemes added a second-place finish for the Bulls (57.34) and Schnelzer took third again (59.24) to secure 16 more points.

Forsman added a third event win, this time taking the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:05.92. McCaul followed to secure second place (2:09.00), with Aguilar in fourth (2:09.62) and Donmez in fifth (2:11.01).

Aguilar (2nd, 24.17) and Alex Bulat (4th, 24.57) earned two of the top four spots in the 50-yard freestyle. The duo doubled back in the 100-yard freestyle to do the same, with Aguilar in second (52.35) and Bulat in fourth (53.29). Jurgelon added a fifth-place finish to secure a point for the Bulls too (53.83).

Wasmuth took second place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:06.92. Alex Ericson trailed to take fourth with a time of 2:12.04.

THE DIVING WELL

Saturday presented another strong performance for the Bulls in the diving well, taking the top seven spots in both the one-meter and the three-meter.

Freshman Tristan Krajcarski won the three-meter diving competition with a personal best score of 267.30. Adele Melamud earned second (264.08), with Presley Dorsett in third (257.03), Mallory Hanna in fourth (247.73), Sophie Meuwissen in fifth (236.48), Maggie Meyers in sixth (224.33) and Daphne Fox in seventh (220.88). Dorsett’s score was a season-best performance.

Meuwissen won the one-meter event for the Bulls with a score of 275.25. The junior was just shy of her personal best score in the event (278.90). Dorsett followed to secure another top-three finish (275.25), with Melamud in third (247.73), Hanna in fourth (232.35), Krajcarski in fifth (231.38), Fox in sixth (215.40) and Meyers in seventh (212.33).

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Toledo women’s swimming and diving team dropped a 179-121 decision on the road to Mid-American Conference foe Buffalo on Saturday.

The Rockets are now 2-2 overall with a 1-2 conference record. Toledo finished the meet with 20 top-three finishes, including six event victories and four second-place finishes.

Senior Janne Slegers and junior Leah Evans led the way for the Rockets by winning two events apiece. Slegers captured the 100-yard freestyle (52.01) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.19). Evans won the 100-yard backstroke (55.87) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.87). Evans now leads the team with five individual victories this season, while Slegers ranks second with three wins.

Sophomore Helena Lopes won her second 50-yard freestyle race of the season with a time of 24.13. Lopes, alongside sophomore Rosie Richards, sophomore Audrey Zimmerman and freshman Tiana Temelkova, won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:31.32.

Richards, Temelkova and freshman Claire Kemmere each notched a second-place individual finish in the meet. The Rockets’ 200-yard medley relay team also finished as runners-up in their race with a time of 1:45.78.

“We swam well today. I’m happy with the fight and determination this team is showing this season. Buffalo is a tough team and I think we held our own against them – we didn’t back down from a challenge. We’re in a great spot as we head into our mid-season meet in a couple weeks.”
