Continuing Korean Record Siege, 19-year-old Kim Youngbeom Rips 47.39 100 Free

106th KOREAN NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL

The Korean men continue to break down barriers during the Korean National Sports Festival with multiple records already having been set through the penultimate night of action.

Following up on his monster 46.88 anchor from yesterday’s record-setting men’s 4x100m free relay, 19-year-old Kim Youngbeom fired off a new lifetime best and national mark of 47.39 in the individual 100m freestyle.

Racing in the heats this morning from Busan Sasjik Indoor Swimming Pool, the teen scorched the field, capturing the sole sub-48-second result en route to securing the pole position.

Splits are not available at this time; however, Kim’s effort obliterated his previous career-swiftest mark of 47.96 logged in March of this year.

Additionally, Kim’s 47.39 result easily cleared the former Korean record of 47.56 that teammate Hwang Sunwoo clocked in the semi-finals of the men’s 100m free at the 2020 Olympic Games.

This pair, along with Park Seonkwan‘s time of 47.97 from 2019, remains the sole Korean swimmers ever to have delved under the 48-second barrier in this event.

Entering today’s session, Hwang held the top 100m free time in the world, courtesy of the 47.62 lead-off on the aforementioned relay. That represented the 2nd-best time of his career.

However, Kim’s 47.39 now overtakes the top spot in the rankings on the season. What’s more, he now ranks as the 20th-best performer in history, tying retired American Ryan Held.

Kim wasn’t able to replicate that same caliber of swim in tonight’s finals but he did still top the podium in 48.63.

Lee Yuyeon snagged the silver in 4918 and Kim Minjun bagged the bronze in 49.55. 22-year-old Hwang did not contest this event.

Kim previously held the Korean national record in the 100m butterfly with his PB of 51.65 established last year. That standard was overtaken just tonight by Yang Jaehoon who hit 51.29. Kim settled for silver in the race in a near-best of 51.85. Look for a separate post on that accomplishment.

This thread needs a catchier title, I almost skipped it!! This is a seriously fast time for a non international meet

Also, how do you do 47.3in prelims and then 48.6 in finals?

I’d guess he was satisfied with his time from the morning and took it easy at night. Had the 100 fly a few minutes after (which he got second with 51.85)

A “pedestrian” time these days that would have been off the podium at Worlds this year. Would have medaled in every Olympics. This event has really moved on.
