Indiana’s Van Mathias Made the US National Team on 8 Weeks of Training

2025 SWIMMING WORLD CUP – CARMEL

After primarily being a mid-distance butterfly specialist his whole career, Van Mathias switched up his training during his 5th year and became an NCAA All-American for Indiana in sprint free and breaststroke. After that year, Mathias stepped away from competing and became IU Swimming’s Director of Operations.

However, this past June, when Mathias and the IU coaching staff saw the results from the US Trials, they all thought that Mathias could be up there wtih the best. 8 weeks of training later and Mathias competed at US Nationals in Irvine, qualifying for the Pan Pacific Championship team with a 26.76 50 Breast.

Mathis continues to be the Director of Ops for IU swimming and is training on the side. Competing at the first World Cup stop in Carmel, he made the final in both the 50 and 100 breast, finishing 5th in the 50 and 3rd in the 100.

It is because he is a stud! There is no one built or made like this man. He is not a typical swimmer and that’s not meant in a bad way. He’s just able to do extraordinary things.

Imagine if he had stuck with mid distance fly or not taken his fifth year.

This is why I like adding 50s to the Olympics. There’s a real chance part timers can throw down one of the best 50s in the world.

Further proof that if you focus on the 50s, you really don’t need ‘allot’ of training/yardage under your belt before you can be very competitive. Hence why despite it not being the most popular decision amongst the swimming community, adding 50 strokes can and will really help retain talent that otherwise would have focused on other areas of their life i.e. career.
