CARBONDALE, Ill. – It was a busy weekend for Southern Illinois swim and dive, who was in action on both Friday and Saturday. The Salukis started the weekend by sweeping UIC before both the men’s and women’s teams lost to Northwestern and Miami (OH) on Saturday.

“Another good weekend of racing against three very good teams,” says head coach Geoff Hanson. “We were looking for individual and team improvement from last weekend to this weekend, and I believe we saw that overall. Several of our top performers showed their experience throughout the two days and our newcomers continued to learn and grow early in this season.”

Friday @ UIC: Women’s W, 192-102 | Men’s W, 174-124
After the meet opened with the women’s three-meter dive and men’s one-meter dive, SIU won its first gold by taking the top spot in the women’s 200-yard medley relay. The men’s team then did the same on their side of the event.

Moving to individual swimming events, Lívia Munkácsi-Nagy continued her outstanding start to her freshman season and won the 1000-yard freestyle by over 16 seconds. Joshua Aceves then won the men’s 1000-yard freestyle, followed closely by Kyler BeightsSusana Hernandez then squeaked out a win in the women’s 200-yard freestyle before Alex Cimera won the men’s version of the event by less than 0.15 seconds.

Another Saluki gold has achieved in the women’s 100-yard backstroke, which Liseska Gallegos Gutierrez won; SIU swept the podium in the event as well. The men’s team had similar success, occupying all three spots on the men’s 100-yard backstroke podium.

In the women’s 100-yard breaststroke, Southern went one-two thanks to Olivia Herron and Madalyn Booker, as did Maddax Thompson and Tiago Faleiros in the men’s 100-yard breaststroke. Carter Ruthven then went and won the 200-yard butterfly before Zaria Terry claimed the top spot in the women’s 50-yard freestyle.

Following another pair of diving events, SIU reached the top of the podium again in the women’s 100-yard freestyle courtesy of Hernandez. Cimera, Rodrigo Ramos Chávez, and Nikolas Kosta went one-two-three in the men’s 100-yard freestyle.

Both the women’s and men’s 200-yard backstroke saw the Salukis sweep the podiums, and Herron, Booker, and Ellie Shaw carried the trend over to the women’s 200-yard breaststroke. Ale Hoyos Horvath earned herself a gold medal in the women’s 500-yard freestyle before Herron added another win to her resume in the women’s 100-yard butterfly. Munkacsi-Nagy won once again in the women’s 400-yard IM and Juraj Barcot picked up first in the men’s event. The meet ended by all four of the SIU 400-yard free relay teams picking up podium finishes.

We saw some really impressive times this early in the season and I’m confident that it’s just going to get even better from here.
