We are onto the final day of the World University Games in Berlin, which means a short prelims session this morning. We will see just two individual events, the men’s 400 IM and women’s 400 free, before both medley relays to close off the morning.
Julie Brousseau (4:08.12) and Cavan Gormsen (4:08.21) are the top two seeds in the women’s 400 freestyle, but Ai Yanhan (4:08.49) and Francisca Martins (4:08.68) are within six-tenths of the Florida swimmer’s top seed.
Gormsen even split her 200 free final en route to the gold medal in 1:57.21, a best time by more than eight tenths of a second, and will be the favorite in this event. Yanhan won gold in the 100 free and silver in the 200, and has won two relay silvers already this week – she’ll be looking to add a fifth here.
Portugal’s Martins broke the Portuguese Record in both the semi-finals and final of the 200 free, lowering it below 1:58 for the first time. She’ll be one to watch along with Japan’s Ruka Takezawa, who dropped a second on the 4×200 free leadoff on Day 4.
The men’s 400 IM will see Japanese swimmer Riku Yamaguchi in lane 4 in the final heat, as he owns the fastest time in the field by more than two seconds in 4:12.33. Aleksei Sudarev, who was the 3rd seed in the 200 IM but wound up missing the final, is the 2nd seed here in 4:14.39.
American swimmers Mason Laur and Baylor Nelson, who have already won individual bronzes in the 200 fly and 200 free respectively, will each go in lane 5 of the final two heats. Takumi Mori, the 200 IM champion, is the 5th seed in 4:16.02.
Jeremias Pock, who was 5th in the 50 breaststroke last night, makes a sharp turn to come into this event as the 12th seed. India’s Shoan Ganguly, one of several swimmers to have set an Indian Record so far this year, will go in heat 2.
The U.S. should comfortably put themselves into lane 4 for the final of both the men’s and women’s 4×100 medley relay. South Africa could be a team to watch on the women’s side as they go for their third relay medal this week, although the loss of Michael Houlie likely tanks the men’s chances of making the final.
Owen McDonald leads off for the U.S. men, followed by Nate Germonprez, Matt Klinge and Mitchell Schott. THat indicates of finals team looking something like Will Modglin, Ben Delmar, Kamal Muhammad and MattKing.
The U.S. Women have gone with Teagan O’Dell, Leah Hayes, Ella Welch and Isabel Ivey. Ivey will go for her fifth relay medal this week and fourth on relays, while Hayes gets a chance on breaststroke after showcasing strength in the stroke in both of her IM wins.
Their finals relay is likely Kennedy Noble, Emma Weber, Leah Shackley and Maxine Parker.
