The 2025 North Carolina Long Course Senior Championships came to a close on Sunday. The meet featured a slew of impressive individual performances, and many improvements from times swum at the 2025 USA Swimming National Championships.
Rising NC State senior Drew Salls had the standout swim of the meet. He blasted off to a time of 21.93 in the men’s 50 freestyle, taking down the event and drastically improving upon his previous best of 22.26. His swim would have placed him 6th at Nationals. You can read more about Salls’ swim here.
Greensboro Swimming Association’s 16-year-old standout Kaidy Stout also went faster than she did at Nationals. She swam to victory in the women’s 200 breaststroke, throwing down a personal best of 2:28.63, beating her previous best of 2:29.22. That time earned her ninth place at nationals in June. Her time last weekend would have earned her eighth. She is now the fastest performer this year in the girls’ 15-16 age group for the 200 breaststroke, and in that age group is ranked 18th all-time.
Stout also swam the 100 breast, finishing second with a time of 1:11.03. She was edged by North Carolina Aquatic Club’s Skyler Smith, who finished in 1:09.08
The men’s 100 free final contained a trio of impressive swims. NC State’s Jerry Fox won the event with a season best of 49.17. He was followed up by North Carolina Aquatic Club’s Sean Setzer, who swam a personal best of 49.39. Mecklenburg Swim Association’s Michael Rice came home in third with a personal best of 49.84. All three swimmers swam the event at nationals, and all three swimmers went faster than they did in June.
Fox and Salls did not represent NC State alone. Members of Wolfpack Elite put on a show of force all weekend. Aiden Hayes, the 2023 NCAA Champion in the men’s 200 fly, won the men’s 100 fly in a time of 52.56. He did not compete in any other events. Matt Marsteiner won gold in the men’s 800 (8:13.05) and 1500 free (15:48.63), and Katherine Helms placed first in the women’s 400 free (4:19.26).
University of North Carolina’s Xavier Ruiz also had a standout meet. The Puerto Rican swimmer placed first in the men’s 100 and 200 breast, swimming 1:01.18 and 2:12.83 respectively, and in the 200 and 400 IM, with times of 2:01.40 and 4:23.86. He dropped four seconds in the 400 IM and was within a second and a half of his personal bests in his other events.
The men’s and women’s titles were won by the Marlins of Raleigh, who came out on top after a series of relay duels with the Mecklenburg Swim Association.
The two teams finished one-two in three out of six of the relays. Mecklenburg won all of those encounters and four out of the six relays overall. The closest margins came in the women’s 400 free relay, which was won by just .95 seconds. Despite their relay victories, Mecklenburg could not keep pace with the Marlins of Raleigh in individual events. The meet ended with the Marlins of Raleigh in first place by a margin of 450 points.
Other Standout Performances
- 15-year-old Reina Liu won the women’s 400 IM in a time of 4:48.57. The TAC Titan’s swimmer also placed third in the women’s 50 free with a time of 25.46, a personal best that makes her the 28th fastest swimmer all time in the girls’ 15-16 age group.
