EASTON, Pa. – Sixteen different Loyola University Maryland swimmers won individual events on Saturday, five won two, and the Greyhounds set four pool records in a Patriot League sweep of host Lafayette College.
Joe Hayburn etched his name on the Weinstein Natatorium record board with two of his victories, Lily Mead broke a pool standard that had been on the books for 24 years, and both men’s relay teams set new marks in the Greyhounds victory.
The men took a 204-95 decision against the Leopards, while the Loyola women were 184-116 victors in the meet that wrapped up a stretch of three competitions in five days to start the 2024-2025 season for the Greyhounds.
Record Setters
- Hayburn won both men’s backstroke events in pool record time, slashing the previous standards to 49.06 in the 100 and 1:47.66 in the 200.
- Mead broke a record that had stood since 2000 with her swim of 2:20.24 in the 200 breaststroke.
- Loyola’s men opened the meet with a standard-setting win in the 400 medley relay where Joe Hayburn, Michael Venit, Patrick Hayburn and Brennan Coyle went 3:20.10 to best teammates JD Moyer, Zach Eisenmann, Hayden Bartz and Liam Schindler by more than six seconds.
- The Greyhounds closed the day with a pool record in the 200 freestyle relay where Joe Hayburn, Schindler, Patrick Hayburn and Brennan Coyle took first in 1:22.86.
Take Two
- Mead was a two-time winner for the Greyhounds in the women’s races, winning the 100 (1:05.89) and 200 breaststrokes.
- Kiernan Leary completed the distance freestyle double with victories in the 1,000 (9:45.73) and 500 (4:45.53) for the men.
- Patrick Hayburn won two different stroke races, taking first in the 200 freestyle (1:44.02) and the 100 butterfly (51.11). His younger brother, Joe, won both backstroke events in the above stated record fashion.
- Brennan Coyle continued the solid start to his freshman season, winning the 100 breaststroke (57.47) and the 200 individual medley (1:55.70).
Relay Wins
- The Greyhounds took first in all four relays with the men setting pool records in both.
- Mead, Avery Stimmel, Haley Robinson and Charley Tulio opened the women’s meet with a victory in the 400 medlay relay, swimming 3:56.21, and the team of Stimmel, Fay Moser, Robinson and Tulio closed in 1:36.70 to win the final race, the 200 freestyle relay.
Two For The Family
- Loyola’s Hayburn brothers were not the only pair of siblings to claim victories for the Greyhounds as Brennan and Riley Coyle did the same.
- Riley won the 100 freestyle in 47.79, while Brennan was a winner in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley.
- Also keeping it in the family was Michael Venit with his victory in the 200 breaststroke. The junior swam 2:10.96 to lead a first-through-fourth finish for Loyola in the event. His older brother, Jay Venit, ’20, is a Loyola alum and current assistant coach for the Greyhounds.
Fast First Years
- Six events were won by first-year Loyola swimmers at the meet.
- CC Leoni won the women’s 1,000 freestyle (10:42.59), Samantha Yerkes took first in the women’s 200 backstroke (2:09.86) and Julia Mason was the women’s 200 freestyle winner (1:57.84).
- Moyer took first in the men’s 200 butterfly (1:55.30) in addition to Brennan Coyle’s two wins on the men’s side.
Sprint To The Finish
- Loyola won both 50 and 100 freestyles against the Leopards. Charley Tulio took the women’s race in 24.20, and Schindler touched the wall in 21.60 to win the men’s race.
- Tulio led a one-through six finish for the Greyhounds women in that race.
- Moser edged Tulio and Robinson in the women’s 100 freestyle with a winning time of 53.72 as the Greyhounds were first-through third, fifth and sixth in the race.
- Riley Coyle was victorious in the men’s version of the race.
Top Trio Sweep
- Loyola went first through third in the women’s 100 butterfly and the women’s 500 freestyle, as well.
- Katie Witkop won the butterfly in 58.97, while Michaela Schultz was a winner in 5:16.49 in the 500 freestyle.
Thomas Murphy Invitational Coming Up Next
- The Greyhounds will welcome four teams – Lehigh, Mount St. Mary’s, Towson and UMBC – to the Mangione Aquatic Center next weekend to host the Thomas Murphy Invitational Friday-Sunday, October 25-27. Each day will feature two sessions with the first at 10 a.m. and the second at 6 p.m.

EASTON, Pa. – The Leopards kicked off their season on Saturday afternoon, hosting Loyola at Weinstein Natatorium. Both the men’s and women’s teams fell to the Greyhounds, 204 to 95 and 184 to 116, respectively.
The Lafayette divers started off the season with strong performances. Sophomore Mia Guster broke the school record in both the 1- and 3-meter dives. Guster scored 258.23 in the 1-meter, breaking her own record, and 253.13 in the 3-meter, surpassing Alana Anzalone (244.80) from 2011. Senior Shaylee Daniels secured second in the 3-meter with a score of 243.30.
For the men, sophomore Landon Orth captured first place in the 1- and 3-meter dives. Orth took home a score of 297.93 in the 3-meter and 315.30 in the 1-meter, breaking the school record and pool record, both of which were his own records from the 2023-24 season. Along with breaking records, Orth’s performance in the 1-meter was an NCAA Division I Zone A qualifying standard. Following close behind in the 1-meter, junior Peter Curtis snagged second place, scoring 268.95.
For the women’s swimmers, senior Maggie Ivie took home first and second-place finishes in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke (59.89, 2:10.68). Junior Isabella Van Ess reeled in a first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard IM (1:06.67, 2:10.95). Freshman Ever Ferguson and sophomore Abigail Bebel garnered first and second in the 200-yard fly with 2:10.36 and 2:11.52 finishes, respectively.
On the men’s side, sophomore Alexander Zoldan managed second in both the 1000- and 500-yard freestyles (9:51.43, 4:45.63). Classmate Alexander Reihl secured second in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle (21.87, 48.07) and senior Peter Kawash had two second-place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard IM (52.54, 1:58.15)
“Our swimmers and divers performed really well today. The first meet of the season is always an interesting adventure,” said Lafayette head coach James Dailey. “Our first years are always nervous and our upper class always sees it as a beginning or at least starting point to compare all of our next performances against. There were a lot of nerves and expectations.”
“To start the season with three school records and one NCAA Division I Qualifier is awesome. I’m proud of everyone today,” Dailey continued.
The Maroon and White compete again at Colgate on Oct. 26 at noon.
