Lehigh Opens Season With Sweep of Rider

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Lehigh women’s swimming and diving downed Rider 216-78.5 in the 2024-25 season opener at Coppola Pool. The Mountain Hawks completely dominated, winning 15 individual events. 

“It was overall one of the most positive nights of Lehigh swimming and diving in the last five years,” said head coach Rob Herb

Senior Willa Werwaiss and junior Caitlin Deitch shined as they won all four events they competed in on Friday. Werwaiss captured a victory in the 100-yard freestyle (53.74), the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.28), the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.23) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:36.21).

Deitch was on the winning relay team with Werwaiss while also capturing first-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (24.33) and the 100-yard butterfly (57.10). 

Joining Werwaiss and Deitch on the 200-yard medley relay team was Zoe Davies and Clara Moschella who captured first with a time of 1:48.23. Mairin Ludwig and Giulia Beverini also were on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team. They captured first with a time of 3:26.21. 

Davies and Ludwig tallied wins of their own as Davies won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.64) and Ludwig won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:33.20) and the 200-yard IM (2:08.15). 

First-year Claire Coughlin had an incredible performance in her debut, winning the 100-yard backstroke (59.77) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.06). Senior Natalie Martin also had a pair of first-place finishes, winning the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.64) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:17.63).

Senior Sarah Gill picked up right where she left off on the diving board as she won the one-meter dive (260.93) while capturing second in the three-meter dive (260.93). Sophomore Kate Whitaker came in fourth in the one-meter dive (215.10) with first-year Ashlyn Bardack taking fifth place (187.13). 

Lehigh doesn’t have to wait long before its next meet as the Mountain Hawks take on West Chester and Bloomsburg at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Graham Natatorium. 

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Lehigh men’s swimming and diving team opened its 2024-25 season with a big win over Rider as the Mountain Hawks won 155.5-138.5. Lehigh totaled nine individual wins on Friday.

Lehigh’s first-years had an incredible performance in the season opener. First-year Will Pestrichelli shined, winning three events in his collegiate debut. Pestrichelli won the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.13), the 500-yard freestyle (4:49.41) and the 1000-yard freestyle (9.55.72). 

First-year Frankie Prekop won the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.68) and first-year Jack Deppe won the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.51) and the 200-yard IM (1:54.77)

Junior Ben Kisker totaled multiple wins as he won the 100-yard backstroke (51.74) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.63). First-year Tristan Ronayne was right behind Kisker in the 200-yard backstroke, coming in second with a time of 1:54.65.

Junior Aaron Williams totaled a win in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.86 and a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (21.39). 

Senior Connor Goodyear picked up a couple of second-place marks in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.44) and the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.63). 

Senior diver Jack Grotke came in third place in the one-meter dive with 143.55 points and third in the three-meter dive with 111.83 points. 

The Mountain Hawks will have less than 24 hours before traveling to West Chester to take on the Golden Rams and Bloomsburg at 1 p.m. at the Graham Natatorium.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University women’s swimming and diving team was defeated by Lehigh, 216.5-79.5, Friday night. The Broncs fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Mountain Hawks improve to 1-0.

The Bronc women won one event in the meet.

Maiti O’Connor (South Plainfield, NJ/The Wardlaw-Hartridge School) earned a victory on the 3-meter, scoring 245.10.

– Casey McLaughlin (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) claimed second in the 1,000-free with Smith finishing third.
– Allison Stewart (Newtown Square, PA/Lower Merion) was third in the 100- and 200-breast.
– Hannah Yemec (Bluffton, SC/May River) claimed third in the 100-fly, 200-fly, and 200-IM.
– Casey Morgan (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) tied for third in the 50-free before claiming third in the 200-back.
– McLaughlin also finished second in the 500-free.
– O’Connor and Karyn Creelman (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) finished two-three on the 1-meter.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University men’s swimming and diving team was defeated in its home opener Friday night, 155.5-138.5, by Lehigh. The Broncs fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Mountain Hawks improve to 1-0.

The Bronc men won six events in the meet.

The Broncs got off to a quick start, claiming the win in the 200-medley relay when Nicholas Lane (Hackettstown, NJ/Lane Academy), Matthew Borovik (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield), Tivon Benjamin (Palm Bay, FL/St. Anthony’s Secondary School), and Billy Ruddy (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny Regional) stopped the clock at 1:32.98.

In the 100-breast, the Broncs got a one-two finish when Maxwell Connelly (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) and Borovik swam 57.60 and 58.18.

Ruddy won the 50-free in 20.97 and Ethan Rogowski (Waterford, NY/Shenendehowa) tied for second in 21.39. He then claimed victory in the 100-free, swimming 46.87.

Stavros Xantheas (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) and Steven Figueroa (Whittier, CA/La Serna) were one-two on the 1-meter, scoring 278.18 and 228.38, respectively. The pair flipped places on the 3-meter with scores of 276.60 and 274.13.

Rider closed out the meet with a win in the 400-free relay with Dawid Turos (Riverwoods, IL/Deerfield), Rogowski, Cesar Alvarez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/The Ashton School), and Ruddy combining for a time of 3:07.68.
