Before swimming prelims of the 100 butterfly, Swedish swimmer Louise Hansson reportedly ran into issues regarding the approval of her competition swim cap.
According to Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, Hansson provided five different caps to an inspector, who asserted there was an issue with a sponsor’s logo.
World Aquatics has restrictions on what can be printed on swim caps in competition. According to section 8.5 of the competition regulations, the following is allowed:
One (1) manufacturer’s logo of a maximum size of 20cm² on the front.
One (1) flag and/or country name (code) of a maximum size of 32cm². The side on which the flag and country
name (code) shall be printed will be advised by World Aquatics.
For World Aquatics Championships one (1) World Aquatics Partner’s logo on the right side of the size decided
by World Aquatics on a case-by-case basis.For World Aquatics competition, one (1) flag and/or country name (code) of a maximum size of 32cm² can be
printed twice (meaning that the flag and country name can appear on both sides of the cap). This to be advised
by World Aquatics whenever applicable. Competitor’s name of a maximum size of 20cm². The competitor’s
name shall be printed on the same side as the flag and country name (code). Printing the competitors’ name
isn’t compulsory.
It is permissible to wear two (2) caps. Both caps must comply with the advertising rules.
While eventually the issue was disregarded and Hansson was able to wear one of her caps, she told the media that it added unnecessary stress to her prelims swim. She still earned a semifinals berth, finishing 12th, and ultimately ended up qualifying 8th into tomorrow’s final.
This adds to the growing list of issues at these games, from the athletes’ village running low on food, to the competition pool being too shallow.
Besides competing in the semifinals of the 100 fly, Hansson also anchored Sweden’s 4×100 freestyle relay, which finished 5th overall.
Because this has a huge impact on race performance. If Carson foster had a bigger US flag on his cap he would have beat Marchand in fukuoka.
Officials need less power.
I don’t get the idea behind a flag size limit
Someone on the Swedish team (coach/manager) should have made sure that the caps were ok before they even left Sweden.
The swim caps are okay and follow the rules, the official who inspected the caps was wrong! It helps if the inspector knows what to look for.
