The 2024 European Para Swimming Championships in Madeira, Portugal concluded on Saturday. The meet hosted Europe’s top para swimmers, as well as some swimmers from Africa, Australia, Asia, and the US.
The last 3 days of the meet saw 2 more World Records fall. The men’s 100 free S7 final on Thursday night saw Ukraine’s Andrii Trusov win gold in 59.62. With that swim, he broke his own World Record mark of 1:00.09, bringing the record under 1:00 for the first time in history. The other World Record came in the mixed 4×100 medley relay, where Netherlands won in a time of 4:26.54. That Dutch team was made up of Olivier Van De Voort (58.60), Chantalle Zijderveld (1:13.70), Florianne Bultje (1:07.90), Thijs Van Hofweegen (1:06.34).
Some European Records came down as well. Dutchman Rogier Dorsman won gold in the men’s 400 free S11 final, swimming a 4:26.57. That performance took down his own ER of 4:28.47, which was set at the Tokyo Paralympics 3 years ago. Ukraine’s Dmytro Vanzenko claimed victory in the men’s 200 IM SM14, swimming a 2:07.98. He clipped the ER in the event by 0.04 seconds. He also now sits less than half a second off the World Record, which is a 2:07.50. The other European Record to fall (outside of the pair of World Records) came in the women’s 100 back S11, where Neutral Para Athlete Daria Lukianenko won gold in 1:17.89. She shattered the ER in the event, which stood at 1:19.32 from last summer.
A whopping 6 African Records were broken in the last 3 days of the meet. South Africa’s Christian Sadie came in 5th in the men’s 100 free S7, swimming a 1:05.49., That swim marked a new African Record in the event. Sadie also set a new African Record in the men’s 50 fly S7 final where he came in 3rd with a 29.94.
Danika Vyncke, another South African, swam a 29.42 in prelims of the women’s 50 free S13, setting a new African Record in that event. Egypt’s Zeyad Kahil swam a 2:55.35 in prelims of the men’s 200 free S5, setting a new African Record in the event. Kahil also broke the African Record in the men’s 100 free S5, swimming a 1:23.42, as well as the men’s 50 free S5, where he clocked a 40.29.
A pair of Oceanic Records fell on the last few days as well. In the women’s 100 breast SB5 final, Australia’s Isabella Vincent came in 5th with a 2:03.75, marking a new Oceanic Record in the event. Australia also set a new OC in the mixed 4×100 free relay, coming in 3rd with a 4:11.56. Chloe Osborn (1:13.33), Alexander Tuckfield (53.74), Callum Simpson (59.69), and Victoria Belando Nicholson (1:04.80) combined to break the record.
A single Asian Record was broken last week. In the women’s 100 backstroke S9 final, China’s Liu Ying came in 2nd with a 1:13.18, breaking the Asian Record.
