Eddie Reese Picks Up Commitment From Austin Temple: Country’s Best Hidden Breaststroke Star

Haven’t heard of Austin Temple yet? You will. The breaststroker from Virginia based TIDE Swimming has committed to the Texas Longhorns, and Eddie Reese might have gotten himself the steal of the class.

Temple’s yards breaststroke times are noteworthy enough on their own. He’s been 54.95/2:04.88 in the 100 and 200 yard events.

It’s when you start to dig a little deeper that you see how special he might be. At the 2013 NCSA Junior National Championships, he was a 1:01.99 in the 200 meter breaststroke and 2:18.23 in the 200 meter breaststroke.

In the entire United States last year, there were four swimmers who went under 1:02 as teenagers. Two, you’ve all heard of, Kevin Cordes and Nic Fink, who were the top two at the World Championship Trials. One, most SwimSwam readers have heard of, 16-year old Carsten Vissering. Temple, though, is the surprise name in that group.

The relative anonymity is probably in part due to how fast Temple rose to that level. In 2013, he knocked 5 seconds off of his best time in long course, after knocking off 5 in 2012. In the 2012-2013 yards season, he took off over 2 seconds in his 100.

And he’s still relatively new to the whole year-round swimming thing. He was a BB swimmer until he turned 14.

His TIDE head coach Josh Fulton once described him to SwimSwam as a monster talent, and the times followed to back that up.

And now he’ll take that talent to Texas. A Texas team that struggled to fill their breaststroke spots last season, are in a little better shape this season with Imri Ganiel and Will Licon, and will have a good, young and most importantly deep breaststroke group when Temple comes to town in the fall of 2014.

You mentioned Eddie Reese being so thin now.
Has he been working out resulting in the lost weight?
Is he ok physically?

After Austin Surhoff, another Austin coming to Austin. if Dressel signs up, they might as well make Eddie finally “famous.”
