New Zealand National Champ Sam Perry Coming to United States for College

Sam Perry from New Zealand has made the decision to come to the United States to swim, and has verbally committed to the Stanford Cardinal.

He is primarily a freestyler and butterfly, with short course meters bests of:

50 fr: 22.39
100 fr: 49.26
200 fr: 1:47.46
400 fr: 3:49.65
100 fly: 53.99
200 fly: 1:59.22

That 100 fly time made him the national champion, and his 50 placed him 3rd overall.

Converted to yards, that 50 is around a 20.1, that 100 free is around a 44.1, and that 100 fly would be around a 48.6.

Perhaps his most impressive swim of the whole meet, though, was a 21.8 relay off of a relay start at Nationals, which converts to a 19-mid.

Perry’s improvements don’t seem close to being done, either. Between the 2012 Short Course nationals and the 2013 Short Course Nationals, he had big drops, especially in the longer events. Specifically:

50 fr: 0.96s
100 fr: 1.69s
200 fr: 3.53s
400 fr: 8.99s
100 fly: 1.80s
200 fly: 14.50s

Stanford is making a case for the number one class in the country this year (though of course Caeleb Dressel‘s decision could change that in a hurry), with Perry joining names like Curtis OgrenAndrew Liang, Brock TurnerWes Olmsted, and Liam Egan in this deep and well-rounded class.

I would certainly give the #1 recruiting class to Cal at this point, pending change. They have a little more depth and quality, but it’s close

You’re probably right on that one, with the addition of Gornay for sure. But even this kid has quite a range, from a 22.3 (20.1) to a 3:49 (4:24). Good get for Stanford. Should be fun for Ted and Scott to play around with, as it would be tough doing the 50 and 500

Those aren’t very big drops for three years are they..?
