RIVERSIDE – California Baptist swim and dive dove into 2024 with hosting responsibilities as they hosted their annual dual with Division III powerhouse Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Lancers swam well on a chilly but beautiful Friday afternoon, claiming 13 total wins on the men’s and women’s sides, including three relay events.

Mark Kovacsics cruised to a pair of wins, swimming sans cap but still easily claiming victory in the 1,650 and 500 freestyle races. While Kovacsics dominated the distance races for the men, Sofia Maksimova did the same with the sprints for the women. Maksimova earned wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle races and contributed to the 500 freestyle relay win.

The divers were also in action on Friday, beginning the three-day UCLA Diving Invitational in Westwood. Natalia Bedolla was the sole female representative for the Lancer women in the 1-meter finals on Friday, posting a two-round final score of 505.65 to earn 17th place. Mario Del Valle led a trio of CBU men in the 3-meter final, placing ninth in the event with a combined score of 596.25. Gael Jimenez saw his first action of the 2023-24 season today, claiming 11th place with a score of 584 even. The final Lancer finalist was John Angelovic, who claimed 16th overall with a final tally of 523 flat.

The Lancer swim side will pull double duty this weekend by competing in back-to-back meets. After hosting on Friday, CBU will travel to Malibu to take on UC Santa Barbara. The divers will compete in day two of the UCLA Diving Invitational, which will see the women move up to the 3-meter board while the men take on the levels of the platform discipline.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Katy Shaw won the 500-yard freestyle and the 1650-yard freestyle, leading a 1-2-3 finish in both events, but the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s swimming and diving team came up just short in a road 116-88 defeat to Division I California Baptist on Friday at the Lancer Aquatics Center.

The event was an annual distance meet between the two schools, which features extended 300-yard races in the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and individual medley, as well as 500-yard freestyle and medley relays.

The Athenas went 1-2-3 in the first individual race of the day, with Katy Shaw taking first in the 1650 with a time of 17:40.05, followed just under five seconds later by Revere Schmidt, and Alex Towers winning a neck-and-neck battle for third place by just .18.

Shaw and Schmidt were the top two finishers in the 500 free later in the meet, with Shaw finishing in 5:13.54 and Schmidt just over four seconds behind in 5:17.65. Kyra Burns took third place for the Athenas in 5:21.02, and Corley Smith was right behind in fourth in 5:21.40.

Mackenzie Mayfield earned a win in the 300-yard IM in 3:22.16, leading another 1-2-3 CMS finish, as Allyson Yao was second in 3:25.25 and Schmidt was third in 3:27.37. Sun Young Byun also picked up a win for CMS in the 200 free in 1:56.03.

Annette Chang earned a third-place finish in the 100 free in 54.32, Florence Lin was third in the 300-yard backstroke in 3:26.56, and Yao came in third in the 300-yard breaststroke in 3:46.68.

CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it returns to SCIAC competition for a tri-meet at Cal Lutheran, along with La Verne.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Anderson Breazeale won the 200-yard freestyle and the 300-yard backstroke for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s swimming and diving team, and swam the anchor on a winning freestyle relay, but Division I California Baptist was able to come away with a narrow 115-89 win in on Friday at the Lancer Aquatics Center.

The competition was an annual distance meet between the two schools, which features 300-yard events in the backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke and individual medley, as well as 500-yard relays.

Frank Applebaum added a win in the 300-yard butterfly, and Steven Tran was victorious in the 300-yard breaststroke. The Stags also capped off the meet with a win in the 500-yard freestyle relay, with Jeremy TanDylan KruegerSpencer Merodio and Breazeale winning a close race by 1.5 seconds.

Breazeale gave the Stags their first win of the day when he finished the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.75, a margin of 2.5 seconds over Asa Frisbee of CBU. Krueger had a close battle in the 50 free, finishing in 21.18 seconds, which was third place, just one-tenth of a second out of first, and one-hundredth of a second out of second place.

Applebaum took first in the 300-yard butterfly in 2:53.84, and Breazeale earned his second win in the 300-yard backstroke in 3:01.50, a margin of just over four seconds. Tran’s win in the 300-yard breaststroke was also by a healthy five-second margin, finishing in 3:17.82.

Tran added a runner-up finish in the 300-yard IM, while Lucas Lang was second in both the 500 free and the 1650 free. Grant Stucky was third in the 300 back, and Cole Sumino finished third in the 500 free.

CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it travels to Cal Lutheran for a tri-meet with La Verne.
