Today’s morning prelims through the 400 freestyle are posted below. Some great swims all around. Eric Shanteau is looking to avenge his second place finish in the 200 breaststroke from yesterday, and came out and blew away the field in the 200 breaststroke, ahead of Kitajima by nearly 3 seconds.
The women’s 50 free should be an extremely tight race between Arlene Semeco, Amanda Weir, and Lisa Nathanson. Kitajima won’t expect to be dominated as badly in the final of the 200 breast. And the men’s 50 free had all 8 finishers in the 23-second range, which should make for a photo finish. Nick Thoman, the world record holder in the SCM backstroke, didn’t have a great time in prelims, but will likely blow away the field in the finals. He will be chased by an exciting and very tight grouping for second place.
