Alex Trompke from the Boise State YMCA Swim Team in Idaho has verbally committed to Michigan State, after selecting from 16 Division I visit invitations, including Minnesota, Arizona State, and Virginia Tech.
Trompke’s selection came down to a combination of athletics and academics, as most of these decisions do, but Michigan State was specifically important to him.
“I loved the school, the coaches and really connected with the team,” Trompke said. “They are also #1 in the country in my major and the education I will receive there is very important to me. It was a big factor in my decision. I am very excited to become a Spartan and swim for Michigan State next fall!”
US News ranked Michigan State as the #1 elementary education program in the country, (with Columbia, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, Georgia, Michigan, and Virginia behind them).
Trompke is primarily a sprint butterflier/backstroker, with bests of 49.9/49.8 in the 100 yard races, respectively. He projects more toward the backstrokes, though, with a 1:50.7 in the 200 yard race. That’s important for the Spartans, as their six best 100 yard backstrokers from last season were all juniors and seniors, so they need a lot to rebuild their depth there.
Trompke also swims for Rocky Mountain High School.
The Spartans were 10th out of 10 teams at last year’s Big Ten Championship meet, but did score at NCAA’s thanks to a 10th-place finish in the 100 fly from senior Jacob Jarzen.
