The 52nd annual Waikiki Roughwater Swim, one of the oldest open water races in the world, was held this past Monday in Waikiki, Hawaii.
Over 700 swimmers completed the 2.394-mile course that begins at Sans Souci Beach and ends on Duke Kahanamoku Beach. The race utilized a seeded start, with groups of 150-200 people beginning the race at five-minute intervals.
Australia’s Ollie Signorini crossed the finish line 1st with a time of 47:43, narrowly beating University of Hawaii freshman Riley Clinton by a second. Signorini’s performance marks his 5th victory of the swim after taking the title in 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2022.
Leading the way on the women’s side with a time of 51:10 was Los Angeles native Kathleen Hohwald. Hohwald improved on her 3rd place finish from last year, this time clearing the rest of the women’s field by over two minutes. Catherine Breed, a record-setting open water swimmer and Cal swimming alumnus, took the runner-up spot for the 2nd year in a row in 53:19.
Rounding out the top three swimmers on each side was Pan Pacific and World University Games medalist Chad La Tourette for the men (48:09), and Australian Suzanne Ryan among the women (54:41).
Awards were additionally given out for the top three in each age group, as well as the top finishers in the military division.
