The entry deadline for the opening leg of the Mare Nostrum Tour has come to a close, and we now know who will officially be racing next weekend (May 13-14) in Canet, France.
Notable entrants at the competition include sprinting stars Sarah Sjostrom, Cate Campbell and Michael Andrew, along with double Olympic silver medalist Siobhan Haughey.
Andrew, 24, has taken on his customary busy event schedule, with eight entries on the books for the two-day competition:
- 50 free
- 100 free
- 50 back
- 100 back
- 50 breast
- 100 breast
- 50 fly
- 100 fly
Sjostrom and Campbell have identical event lineups with entries in the women’s 50 free, 100 free and 50 fly, while Haughey will race the women’s 50, 100, 200 and 400 free along with the 50 breaststroke.
The Netherlands’ Marrit Steenbergen will join the stacked female freestyle events with entries in the 50, 100 and 200 free, and she’ll also take on the 100 back, 50 fly and 200 IM. Great Britain’s Freya Anderson will also notably contest the women’s 100 and 200 free.
The women’s backstroke events will also feature some marquee matchups with Canadians Kylie Masse and Ingrid Wilm set to go head-to-head in the 50 and 100-meter races, while Masse is notably opting not to contest the 200.
Along with Andrew, the men’s side will also feature the likes of Florent Manaudou (50 free, 50 fly), Tomoru Honda (100/200 fly), and backstroke specialist Ksawery Masiuk, who is opting to race the 50 free, 100 free, 50 fly and 100 fly.
Marie Wattel, Maxime Grousset, Katsuhiro Matsumoto, Lara Van Niekerk and Reona Aoki are among the other key entrants.
Several names who were confirmed for the final leg of the series in Monaco are absent from the Canet entries, including Kristof Milak, Lydia Jacoby, Ruta Meilutyte and Thomas Ceccon, plus the majority of the Canadian swimmers.
It would be cool if more Americans did the Mare Nostrum swim series.
Maybe the distance is a detractor.
100m World champion Fred Kerley in athletics flew 18 hours to Australia to race a 400, distance isn’t an excuse in this modern world
I agree. If only the athletes had enough money to travel wherever
He would’ve received an appearance fee and he was in Australia for several weeks not just for a single race.
MA should get some credit for embracing this. Not sure about the Mexico trip but in general if you offer some cash and have some 50s he will be there
Barcelona will be a good meet as well
Because he does SO well with heavy event lineups
his 150 IM will be awesome. His 200 IM might be mehhh..
Monaco is going to have the 50 shootout events like last year. Those races were fun to watch.
47 incoming
He’s not swimming the 200 IM here, so no I don’t think we’ll be seeing a 47-second final lap.
Unless you’re suggesting he splits 23/47 for a blistering fast 1:10 100 free.
Looking forward to his 100free
Wasn’t bro like 19 years old 2 years ago?
