A year after verbally committing to Arizona State University, Lee’s Summit West High School senior Leo Kurucz has changed his plans and will now stay in-state to swim and study at the University of Missouri.

Kurucz trains year-round with Tsunami Swim Team of K.C. and specializes mainly in freestyle. In the 15 months since his commitment to ASU, he has dropped just over 51 seconds in the SCY mile, 27.3 in the 1000, 6.5 in the 500, and 3.1 in the 200. Last summer, he improved his LCM 800 free by 24.1, his 400 by 11.7, and his 200 by 5 seconds. Most of his LCM bests came from the NCSA Summer Championship, where he finaled in the 100 free (24th), 200 free (11th), 400 free (24th), and 800 free (12th).

After placing second in the 100 free (45.77) and fourth in the 200 free (1:40.85) as a junior, Kurucz won the 200 free (1:37.71) and came in third in the 100 free (45.44) at the 2022 MSHSAA Class 2 Swimming and Diving State Championships his senior year. His 200 free time was the second-fastest in Missouri history.
Kurucz will suit up for the Tigers next fall with Alex Ochsenbein, Jaden Pospihil, John Watson, and Matthew Mortenson.
