Summer Juniors Qualifier Peter Horan Commits To West Virginia (2023)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Peter Horan has announced his commitment continue his education and swimming career at West Virginia University this fall. Horan is from Sandy Hook, Connecticut, where he attends Newtown High School. He also trains and competes year-round with the Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut, located in Brookfield.

I am excited to announce that I have committed to West Virginia University where I will be studying engineering and continuing my swimming career.”

Horan is coming off of a strong showing at YMCA Nationals, where he logged personal best times in two of his primary events. He earned 9th overall in the 100 backstroke, where he took a hundredth off his previous best to post a 48.90. He also cracked 1:50 for the first time in the 200 backstroke, swimming a 1:49.59 to take 12th.

Prior to Y Nationals, Horan won two high school state titles at the CIAC Boys State Open Championships. He won the 50 freestyle in 20.71, putting him just a tenth off his best from December. He dominated in the 100 backstroke, clocking a 48.91 to lead the field by nearly two seconds. He also served as the lead-off leg for his team’s 400 freestyle relay, where he split a personal best time of 45.11.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 free – 20.58
  • 100 free – 45.11
  • 50 back – 22.73
  • 100 back – 48.90
  • 200 back – 1:49.59

The Mountaineers compete in the Big 12 conference, where they finished 3rd out of three teams at this year’s conference championships. Junior Danny Berlitz went on to compete at the NCAA Division I Championships, making it the sixth consecutive season that the program has qualified an athlete to the meet.

Horan would have been the team’s 4th-fastest performer in the 100 and 200 backstroke this season, as well as the 5th-fastest in the 50 freestyle. The backstroke squad was led by junior Justin Heimes, who posted times of 46.85 and 1:43.84 in the 100 and 200 back. Conner McBeth, a sophomore, was the only sprinter on the team to break the 20-second barrier in the 50 free. He logged a 19.82 at the Big 12 Conference Championships, finishing 5th overall at the meet.

With his commitment, Horan joins Parker Sterlitz, Preston Bennett, Trevor Hudson, and Zachary Erb in West Virginia’s incoming class of 2027. Sterlitz, Bennett, and Hudson are freestylers, while Erb focuses on breaststroke.
