Distance Freestyler Trevor Hudson Commits to West Virginia

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Trevor Hudson, a senior at Riverbend High School in Virginia, has committed to West Virginia University. The distance freestyler has Winter Juniors cuts in the 1000 and 1650 yard freestyles, as well as the 200 meter IM.

At the 2022 Class 5 Virginia High School Boys’ state meet, which took place in February during Hudson’s junior year, Hudson finished 4th in the 200 free and 5th in the 500 free. His sophomore year, Hudson only swam the 500 free at states, and he improved one spot from 2021 to 2022 in the event.

Hudson also competes for the Rappahannock Stingrays Swim Team. At the 2022 Speedo Winter Junior Championships – East, he finished 30th in the 1650 with a time of 15:42.92. He also performed well in the long-course distance events over the past year. At the 2022 NCSA Summer Swimming Championships, he finished 19th in the 1500 and 20th in the 400 free. Hudson also has potential to race in shorter events, having finished 24th in the 200m free at the NCSA Championships in July.

In addition to his Winter Juniors cuts, Hudson has 2023 USA Swimming Futures cuts in the SCY 50 free, 200 free, 500 free, 200 IM, 400 IM, and the LCM 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 400 free, 1500 free, and 400 IM.

Best short-course yards times:

  • 200 free: 1:39.84
  • 500 free: 4:30.51
  • 1000 free: 9:23.58
  • 1650 free: 15:41.24

West Virginia is a member of the Big 12 conference. At the 2022 Big 12 Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, the university finished 3rd out of three teams, behind powerhouse University of Texas and TCU. The conference will undergo a dramatic change in the next few years, though, with Texas leaving for the SEC and the addition of BYU, Houston, and Cincinnati.

At that meet and with his best times, Hudson would’ve placed 6th in the 1650. He also would’ve made the consolation final of the 500 free and the 200 free, highlighting his potential to race and earn points in the shorter events as well.

Current junior William Mullen is one of West Virginia’s top distance freestylers. This season, he has the 5th-fastest 1650 time in the conference with a 15:24.48. Hudson will have at least one year to train with Mullen when he arrives in the fall. Freshman Max Nielsen is also a powerhouse in the 500 for the team, with the fastest time for the team so far with a 4:27.99, followed closely by Mullen at a 4:28.01.

Any depth in the distance events is helpful to compete with Texas, though the team will be departing to the SEC in 2025, though there is speculation that could happen even earlier. TCU is also a strong competitor for West Virginia, though the two were much closer in point totals at Big 12 Championships.

Hudson joins mid-distance freestyler Preston Bennett, breaststroker/IMer Zacahry Erb, and distance swimmer and multi-stroker Parker Sterlitz in the class of 2027.
