ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Roberts Wesleyan University has hired Stephanie Barbero as the head coach for the newly-added women’s triathlon team.
Barbero is well-connected to the Rochester area with over 35 years of experience in education with the last 19 years being at Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women where she serves as the Department Chairperson for Physical Education & Health Physical Education.
In addition to her experience in education, Barbero has coached multiple sports, but her passion is to train triathletes.
“When I first learned that Roberts Wesleyan was working with USA Triathlon and the NCAA to start a women’s triathlon team, I knew that I wanted to be a part of it,” Barbero said. “Knowing that the athletics and administrative staff at Roberts recognized that young women deserve to hone their talents in the multi-discipline sport of triathlon and compete at the collegiate level is empowering.”
Rochester has had a growing presence in the triathlon space for many years and Barbero has both volunteered her time with local triathlon as well as competed individually. She currently volunteers as the Safety Officer for Rochester Area Triathletes (RATS). Barbero is also a two-time Ironman finisher, USAT National AG competitor, and a duathlon and triathlon Worlds qualifier.
“Having Stephanie join us as head coach is going to be very beneficial to the establishment and growth of women’s triathlon here at Roberts,” said Executive Director of Athletics, Bob Segave. “Her commitment to coaching and leading young women was apparent throughout the interview process. I know she will make a positive impact on the student-athletes here at Roberts.”
Barbero has already begun her new role at Roberts and will oversee all facets of building up the new program that plans to begin competing in the fall of 2023.
“I am thrilled to be hired as the Head Women’s Triathlon Coach and excited to build a team of young women, strong in mind and body, and grounded in faith,” Barbero said “I have received a heartwarming welcome from everyone I have connected with in the few days that I have been here, making me feel that Roberts is “home” to me already. I am confident that we will build a team of athletes that will push their limits, as only the sport of triathlon can, allowing them to reach their fullest potential and find success at the highest level.”
