There were no surefire qualifications in the final session of the UNC Last Chance Meet after Duke’s Catherine Pernell locked up her spot for the big dance in prelims, but a few swimmers have left themselves squarely on the bubble for selection in the next two weeks.
Here’s what happened:
- Virginia’s Max Edwards shaved .01 seconds off his season-best in the 100 backstroke. That means he’s still ranked 29th in the event (based on times coming into the day). With the Pac-12 Championships yet to go, plus other Last Chance meets and the Big Ten results from Friday, he’s in a precarious position. Usually between 28 and 32 men are selected for NCAAs in each event.
- UNC’s Boyd Poelke is on the bubble with his 45.48 from the Tennessee Invite. He swam 46.06 on Friday, which won’t improve his standing. 45.57 was invited last year, so he’s under that, but not by much.
- Virginia’s Max Iida was 1:53.51 in the 200 breaststroke. That doesn’t improve his 1:53.26 from ACCs, which currently has him ranked 27th in the NCAA.
- NC State’s Yara Hierath went 4:11.98 in a women’s 400 IM time trial. That’s about six-tenths slower than what she swam at ACCs. She’s currently ranked 35th in the NCAA; with 38-42 women usually invited per event, she’s firmly on the bubble.
- The North Carolina men swam 6:16.36 in the 800 free relay at ACCs, which was just three-tenths shy of the “A” standard of 6:16.02. With no other “A” cuts and this being just a one day Last Chance meet, that seems to mean that the Tar Heel men won’t have any relays at NCAAs (unless they get four individual swimmers invited).
