Keegan Ingelido Resigns as New Mexico Head Swim Coach Mid-Season

The University of New Mexico is on the market for a new head women’s swimming & diving coach mid-season after Keegan Ingelido stepped down for what the school called “personal reasons” this week.

Ingelido led the program for three-and-a-half years and was the fifth head coach in program history. Prior to New Mexico, she spent a decade on the staff at TCU, including serving as associate head coach from 2014-2017. She also has prior coaching stops with the Fort Worth Area Swim Team, the Stingray Swimming Club in Marietta, Georgia, and the University of New Orleans (NCAA D3).

A native of Georgia, Ingelido (then Walkley) swam at the University of Georgia from 1998 to 2001 and was part of the dominant Bulldog teams from that era. Most notably, she swam fly on the Bulldogs 400 medley relay that set the SCM world record in the 400 medley relay at the 2000 NCAA Championships. She earned a B.S. in Sports Communications from Georgia, graduating in 2002.

Ingelido took over a Lobos team in 2019 that had their highest conference finish in program history, taking 4th at the Mountain West Championships under then-coach Dorsey Tierney-Walker. The results slid a bit in the Ingelido era. In 2020 they finished 8th in the Mountain West Championships. After skipping the 2020-2021 season, they placed 9th out of 9 teams at the 2022 championship.

“I want to thank Keegan for her contributions to our program over the past three and a half years,” said Vice President/Director of Athletics Eddie Nuñez.  “We wish her success in her future endeavors.”

Michael Licon, older brother of US National Team member Will Licon, is the team’s assistant coach, and Julie Weddle serves as head diving coach.

Ingelido was working on a one-year contract that paid her $65,000.04 and was due to expire on June 30, 2023.

How do you find and hire a competent person for that salary?

Agreed. I’m a club head coach in a metro area and have assistant part time coaches that make almost that.

Coupled with admins that don’t have coaches backs this is why 1) We see college coaches bouncing around a lot and 2) a LOT of them have been leaving the sport.

That’s barely a living wage especially for someone that far along in their career. Yikes.

A lot of College programs do not pay that much more, but in a lot of places you have the ability to run Swim Camps that can help a coach earn more.

Just seems low to me. I can see 80-100k for a low cost location being a decent salary but an experienced coach would be more I hope.

Even lower at some schools especially the small private ones.

Only 13% of the population in the US makes $100k or more and you think $80-$100k is “decent”. Somebody doesn’t reside in the real world. $65k with almost certainly smoking Uni benefits for a dead last in the conference non-revenue sport is a gift. It’s New Mexico, not LA.

Your 13% is flawed. The workforce participation rate is down around 60% and many like students are part time or inexperienced workers. everybody has their own definition of poverty. I’d say it’s poverty to raise a family of 4 on 60k

That stat dosent reveal the fact that she is a college graduate (most ,70%, of the US population does not) with over 20 years of relevant experience. 65k a year stinks given her creds.

Very, very few head coaches at mid-majors making 100k. FIU is a very good mid-major program and he had an 88k base before his recent extension. It’s more common that these coaches are on one year deals like Ingelido was and they’re expected to sell recruits in a 4 year experience while administration won’t come close to showing that level of commitment to coaches.
