15-year-old Cooper Zarro hosted the third annual Thanksgiving Thousand at the Del Paso Country Club (DPCC) on Thursday, raising $8,500 for Raley’s Food for Families.

The nonprofit organization partners with Feeding America to provide one meal to local Sacramento families for each dollar raised. Zarro’s efforts added up to 8,500 meals this year thanks in part to a corporate match by Raley’s. This year’s total is nearly equal to the sum of the past two years combined.

Zarro raised the money by selling hot chocolate, meet shirts, jackets and goggles (provided by Arena). DPCC members were also able to sponsor swimmers during the race.

The fundraiser was again a dual meet between the DPCC Pirates and Spare Time Aquatics Sharks (STAS) where 35 swimmers competed in the mixed 1000-yard freestyle. 14-year-old Jordan Ragland of DPCC took first place with a time of 10:24.44.
