The 2022 Hungarian Short Course Championships are nearly upon us, with action kicking off from Kaposvár on Wednesday, November 16th.

Although Olympians Katinka Hosszu and Tamas Kenderesi are absent from the entries, World Record holder and 2020 Olympic gold medalist Kristof Milak is expected to dive in no fewer than 6 times over the course of the 4-day meet.

According to the entries, 22-year-old Milak is set to race his bread-and-butter 200m butterfly, along with the 50m and 100m distances of the discipline. Add the 100m IM, 50m free and 200m free and the Hungarian has a packed schedule with which to contend while battling his peers.

As far as short course goes, Milak’s resume boasts the following lifetime bests in each event, followed by the rank in terms of all-time Hungarian performers.

Event (SCM) Lifetime Best Year Performed Rank Among Hungarians
50m free 21.44 2021 4th
200m free 1:42.61 2021 4th
50m fly 22.64 2021 2nd
100m fly 49.71 2021 3rd
200m fly 1:49.98 2019 2nd
100m IM N/A N/A N/A

In the sprints, Milak will go up against Szebasztian Szabo, the reigning national and World Record holder in the SCM 50m fly. Szabo is Hungary’s 2nd-fastest 50m freestyler, owning a lifetime best of 20.72 from last year.

Also among the competitors on the men’s side is 19-year-old Hubert Kos.

It was just this past August that Kos joined the stacked group of talent currently training under Bob Bowman at Arizona State University. Kos, the reigning 200m IM European champion, now trains alongside the likes of Leon Marchand, Chase Kalisz and Jay Litherland.

Racing mainstay Zsuzsanna Jakabos will be among the women’s competitors, as will 2019 world champion Boglarka Kapas. Young guns Ajna Kesely and Viktoria Mihalyvari-Farkas, as well as veteran Evelyn Verraszto are also embedded among the entries.

18-year-old Mihalyvari-Farkas is coming off a successful European Championships this summer where she snagged gold in the 400m IM and silver in the 1500m freestyle.

Milak will race 100m free, not 100m IM.
