Kansas hosted Nebraska for a women’s dual on Saturday at the Robinson Natatorium in Lawrence, Kansas. The Jayhawks won a close meet, coming away with a 157-143 victory.
Kansas was led in part by diver Lize Van Leeuwen, who swept the diving events on the day. Starting with 3-m, Van Leeuwen totaled a score of 301.65, finishing just ahead of teammate Gabriela San Juan Carmona (299.49). In 1-m, Van Leeuwen scored 268.05 points, finishing first by 30 points.
In the water, Lezli Sisung was a force for the Jayhawks, winning both her individual events. In the 100 back, Sisung swam a 55.97, clocking the fastest split in the field on both 50s, which led to her winning the race by nearly a second. Sisung then went on to post a 2:04.06, getting out to a massive lead on the first 100 and holding on to win.
Ellie Wehrmann was another Kansas double event winner, taking the 200 free and 100 free. Wehrmann sped to a 1:52.06 in the 200 free, putting together a well-split race. She went out in 55.60 on the first 100, then came home in 56.46 on the second 100, for a difference of just 0.86 seconds between her 100s.
Wehrmann then swam a 52.06 in the 100 free, touching out Nebraska’s Alexa Kucera (52.20).
Nebraska’s Emily Haimes won a tight race in the 100 fly, swimming a 56.67, touching 0.09 seconds ahead of Kansas’ Lydia Lafferty (56.76). Lafferty got out to a small lead on the first 50, splitting 26.22, just ahead of Haimes’ 26.49. Haimes had the better back half, splitting 30.18 to Lafferty’s 30.54.
Nebraska’s Shannon Stott won both her individual events. She kicked things off in the 200 fly, where she posted a 2:03.65. Stott then swam a 5:00.33 in the 500 free, touching out teammate Genevieve Jorgenson (5:00.74). The pair were right with each other through the whole race, with Stott edging Jorgenson out at the finish.
Jorgenson won the 1000 free in 10:14.79, finishing 15 seconds ahead of the field.
