DAY 5 RESULTS

The 5th day of the 2022 Deaflympics featured finals of the men’s 1500 free, men’s 100 back, women’s 50 back, men’s 200 IM, and the mixed 4×100 free relay.

American Matthew Klotz has already won a handful of medals at these Games, and added to that total today by winning Gold in both the men’s 100 back and the mixed 4×100 free relay. Klotz took the men’s 100 back in 56.52, touching well ahead of the runner-up, Lars Kochmann, who touched 2nd in 58.32. Vladyslav Kremliakov out of Ukraine won Bronze in 58.34. Klotz was near his Deaf World Record, which stands at 56.06, which he set in 2016.

In the mixed free relay, the U.S. squad of Collin Davis, Brooke Thompson, Carli Cronk, and Matthew Klotz teamed up to win Gold in 3:45.90. The U.S. took a fairly unique mixed relay tactic, going male, female, female, male. Poland used the same strategy, taking 3rd with a time of 3:52.85. Ukraine used both their male swimmers first, getting out to a lead, but fell to 2nd on the final 100, ultimately winning Silver in 3:47.87.

Japan’s Ryutaro Ibara won another Gold medal, taking the men’s 200 IM in 2:07.90. Ibara swam the fastest split in the field on back, breast, and free to open up a huge lead as he charged into the finish. Poland’s Konrad Powroznik won Silver in 2:10.22, while American Collin Davis took 3rd with a 2:14.98.

Japan also picked up Gold in the men’s 1500 free, where Satoi Fujihara swam a 16:21.69. Federico Tamborrino took 2nd in 16:29.60, giving Italy a Silver medal. Germany’s Mueller Niklas won Bronze with a 17:01.54.

Poland’s Klaudia Jarzewicz won the women’s 50 back in 32.18, edging out the U.S.’s Emily Massengale by 0.03 seconds. American Brooke Thompson took 3rd, swimming a 33.27.
