Phelps 100-1 Odds to Win at American Century Championship

South Shore, Lake Tahoe, NV (July 16, 2013) – The Golf Channel’s Haney Project subject and 18-time Olympic Gold medalist Michael Phelps will tee off at the American Century Championship this weekend. (Attached photos credit to The Golf Channel. Full field in attached Odds document).

Phelps, a 22-time Olympic medalist, is listed at 100-to-1 odds by Harrah’s Tahoe Sportsbook to win the tournament, which takes place July 19-21 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. Fans can watch Phelps hit the links and put into action everything he has learned from famed golf instructor Hank Haney as the 54-hole tournament will be televised live by NBC Sports and NBC Sports Network. On Friday, July 19, NBC Sports Network will air the tournament from 4-7 p.m. ET and 1-4 p.m. PT. NBC will televise the event on Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21 from 3-6 p.m. ET and Noon-3 p.m. PT.

Dan Quinn, Ernie Els’ part-time caddie and five-time winner of the American Century Championship, is the top choice at 7-2 odds to win the 24th annual celebrity golf tournament. Since 2010, Quinn, the former National Hockey League star who last played for the Philadelphia Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been caddying for 2012 British Open champion and two-time U.S. Open winner Ernie Els for most of his U.S. golf events. Most recently, Quinn was with Els at the U.S. Open at Merion, where the four-time major champion placed fourth. Els will be competing at the 2013 British Open the same weekend that Quinn will be playing in Tahoe, where both men will be defending their titles.

Harrah’s Tahoe Sportsbook has also released a proposition for Quinn and Els to once again win their respective tournaments on the same day, a feat they accomplished last year and also in 2002. The odds that they will both win on July 21 are 85-1 and the odds that they will not are 1 in 105.

Among the other big-name players available for public wagering at Harrah’s and the other legal Nevada Casino Sportsbooks are: John Smoltz (5-1), John Elway (10-1), Jerry Rice (30-1), Ray Allen (40-1), Steph Curry, Chipper Jones and Aaron Rodgers (50-1), Alex Smith and Dan Quail (100-1), Steve Spurrier (200-1), and Shane Battier, Ray Romano and Urban Meyer (300-1). Celebrated perennial longshot Charles Barkley is listed at 500-1.

Second choice to win the tournament is eight-time American Century champion and former MLB pitcher Rick Rhoden, who is posted at 4-1. Billy Joe Tolliver, the former NFL quarterback, who has won at Tahoe three times, follows Rhoden at 9-2. Harrah’s Sportsbook placed John Smoltz, a former MLB pitcher, at 5-1 behind Tolliver. Hollywood actor and Dancing With the Stars alum Jack Wagner, a two-time Tahoe champion, is listed at 6-1.

Tournament title sponsor American Century Investments, is a leading, privately-controlled investment management firm serving professionals, institutions, corporations and individuals. Through its ownership structure, more than 40 percent of company profits support research to help find cures for genetically-based diseases including cancer, diabetes and dementia.
