Colorado State Champion Gio Aguirre Commits to Navy’s Class of 2026

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Stephan “Gio” Aguirre, Colorado State Champion in the 100 free, has verbally committed to the U.S. Naval Academy’s class of 2026.

I’m thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the US Naval Academy!! I’m extremely grateful for all those who helped me along the way and excited to serve my country. Go Navy!!

He swims for Denver Swim Academy and Regis Jesuit High School in Colorado.

Top SCY Times:

  • 200 free – 1:38.32
  • 100 free – 45.46
  • 50 free – 20.91

Aguirre won the 100 free at the 2021 CHSAA 5A State Championships with a 45.56, just .10 off his lifetime best from March. His lifetime best 200 and 50 free times are also from the same meet in March.

Recently, he placed 51st in the 200 free at the 2021 Summer Junior Nationals with a 1:40.01.

He has the potential to earn major Conference Championship points for Navy as his lifetime best times would have earned him 2nd in the 200 free ‘A’ final at the 2020 ECAC Championships, 8th in the 100 free ‘A’ final, and 5th in the 50 free ‘B’ final. His best times also would have placed him in the ‘A’ and ‘B’ finals of the 50 free and 200 free at the 2020 Patriot League Championships, respectively.

Aguirre will add depth to Navy’s sprint freestyle group, especially since one of their top sprinters Jake Evert is not on their roster this season. Evert is an Olympic Trial qualifier in the 50 free who won the 100 free at Navy’s 2021 Conference Championship meet, a dual meet against Army. Evert also placed 2nd in the 50 free and blasted a 43.45 lead-off split on the winning 400 free relay.

Senior Callen Aulizia also leads the Navy’s sprint group; he’s the defending ECAC champion in the 50 free where he swam a time of 20.10.

Navy’s championship meet last season was a dual meet with Army after the Patriot League canceled their conference championships due to COVID-19. Aguirre’s lifetime best times would have placed him 7th in 200 free, 8th in 50 free, and 8th in 100 free in that meet.

Aguirre joins Juan Mora, Benjamin Denman-Grimm, Charlie Krone, Jack Lambert, Mitch Dubey, Michael Phillips, George Brooker, and Nolan Jess in the Navy’s class of 2026 verbal commits.

The Navy men have won every Patriot League Championship since 2004, all under current head coach Bill Roberts. They claimed the ECAC Conference Championship title in 2020 for the 7th time in a row.
