Buffalo Women Win 16 of 18 Events In Unscored Dual Against Cornell

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women’s swimming & diving team (0-0, 0-0 MAC) faced off against Cornell (0-0, 0-0 Ivy League) on Saturday afternoon. The meet was not scored due to Ivy League rules, but the Bulls won 16 out of the 18 events.

THE POOL

To start the day off was the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Sawyer BosleyJillian LawtonElinor Duley, and Toni Naccarella finished first in 1:33.36, nearly 4-seconds faster than Cornell.

The Bulls would finish first and second in the 500 freestyle with Marij van der Mast finished first in 5:06.50. Making her collegiate debut was Abbey Malmstrom who claimed second in a time of 5:08.26.

Katie Pollock picked up this season how she ended last season with a win in the 100 IM with a time of 58.87-seconds. In the 100 breaststroke, she would go on to win by almost 2.5-seconds with a time of 1:04.53.

Just like Pollock, Lawton had a strong day as she won the 100 freestyle in 51.07-seconds.

It was a herd of Bulls in front in the 50 butterfly as Duley (25.91), Neeb (26.01) and T. Naccarella (26.33) swept the podium.

In the final event of the day, the team of Li, Neeb, Brezovski, and Lawton won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:32.52 beating their teammates by just .09-seconds.

THE DIVING WELL

The Bulls dominated the 3-meter dive as they would’ve swept the podium. Victoria Franz finished first and narrowly missed the school record with a score of 350.50. Franz was just .25 behind Meili Carpenter’s 2010 program record. Senior Patricia Arceri finished in sixth with a score of 223.35. Making their UB debuts were freshmen Marialis KwakPresley Dorsett, and Kaylee Donovan. Kwak finished second with 290.25 points with Dorsett finishing third with 258.30 points. Donovan claimed seventh with a score of 217.95. In her first collegiate meet, Kwak moves into the UB record books as she passes Valarie Lortie (275.10, 2016) for 10th all-time in the 3-meter dive.

In the 1-meter dive, Franz would win the event with a score of 289.13. Kwak finished just behind with a score of 267.90 as Dorsett (245.63) and Donovan (211.58) finished third and fourth, respectively. Kwak was just .6 behind Olivia Gosselin’s 2018 top-10 mark.

UP NEXT

The Bulls are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 30 as the team hosts MAC rival Toledo (0-1, 0-0 MAC) at 11 a.m. in the Alumni Arena Natatorium. Be sure to stop in before the UB football game at noon.
