Duquesne Tops James Madison In Home Opener

PITTSBURGH – Pacing 13 of 16 events, Duquesne posted a 176.5-123.5 victory over visiting James Madison on Friday night in the Dukes’ home opener at Towers Pool and Carnegie Mellon.

Duquesne, which was competing as an entire unit for the first time this season, recorded 13 first-place marks in the meet against the four-time Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champion Dukes of James Madison.

Mendy De Rooi registered a team-high four first-place finishes in her Duquesne debut, as the Cumberlands (Ky.) graduate transfer bested the field in the 50 free (23.99), 100 free (52.41), 100 fly (56.22) as well as the 400 medley relay (3:51.47) with teammates Hayley TaylorMadison Dickert and Audrey Steen.

Dickert added a first-place mark in the 100 breast (1:07.03) while Steen won the 200 fly (2:07.14) for the Dukes.

Freshman Orla Egan earned a pair of first-place finishes for Duquesne in the 500 free (5:05.49) and the 1000 free (10:25.92). Classmate Haley Scholer paced the 100 back (57.03) in her collegiate debut, as well.

Emma Menzer recorded two first-place marks for Duquesne in the 200 breast (2:23.34) and 200 IM (2:06.07) while Hanna Everhart won the 200 free (1:55.44) and Reagan Linkous bested the competition in the 200 back (2:04.55)

The Duquesne divers returned to action against James Madison at Carnegie Mellon, with Sidney O’Donnell registered an NCAA Zone cut score on the 1-meter boards at 283.43. Finishing second in the event, the junior had already shattered her own school record and posted an NCAA Zone cut on the 3-meter boards in the Dukes’ season-opener earlier this season against Pitt at Trees Pool. She added a third-place mark on the 3-meter boards (267.38) on Friday evening.

Head coach David Sheets: “I was extremely happy with the results this evening. This group is doing a good job of taking what we are working on in practice and applying it to what we do when we race. As long as we continue to build on the little things we will keep getting better.”

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The James Madison swim & dive team fell to Duquesne, 176.5-123.5, in its second meet of the season Friday afternoon at Towers Pool.

The Dukes drop to 0-2 overall while they hold a 0-1 record in Colonial Athletic Association meets.

JMU took home three first-place finishes and only placed outside of the top two finishes in three events.

Maddie Yager placed first in the 1-meter for the second straight meet with a NCAA Zone qualifying score of 294.38 while Alexa Holloway also took home a first place in the 3-meter with a score of 269.03. Yager’s score is the highest in the CAA so far this season on either board. Lindsey Hammar joined Yager with a second straight NCAA Zone qualifying score by placing third with a 265.50.

The team of Karen SiddowayAlaina ParkGrace Bousum, and Jordyn Schnell narrowly took first in the 400-freestyle relay by one millisecond, with a time of 3:33.15. Siddoway also best her season-opening time in the 100-freestyle with a 52.58 to place second.

A trio of second-place finishes were earned by Jessica Pryne, as she went three-for-three in placing in events she competed in. She recorded a time of 10:30.00 in the 1000-freestyle, 5:08.10 in the 500-freestyle, and 2:08.16 in the 200-IM.

“We had a tough opponent and they challenged us at every turn. Our divers continued to progress and perform great as we had two more Zone qualifying scores recorded by them. There were some positives individually from the meet, but as a whole we were lacking something and Duquesne capitalized.”

The Dukes will be back in the pool on Nov. 6-7 as they compete at the CAA Pod Meet in Wilmington, N.C. Delaware, William & Mary, and hosts UNCW will join them. Saturday, Nov. 6 will feature two swim sessions at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. with a dive session in between from 12-3 p.m. On Sunday, Nov. 7 there will be a single swim session at 10 a.m.
