While many elite swimmers are still involved in the playoffs of season 3 of the International Swimming League (ISL), this year’s European Short Course Swimming Championships are on the horizon.
The biannual event is slated for November 2nd through November 7th at the Palace of Water Sports in Kazan, Russia, site of the 2015 FINA World Championships, as well as the 2019 European Junior Championships.
Nearly 700 athletes representing 50 European nations are expected to race in Kazan, with the host nation set to defend its overall medal table trophy from the 2019 edition from Glasgow. Russia nabbed a total of 22 medals, including 13 gold, while runners-up Italy was next with 20 medals in all, including 6 gold.
The Netherlands, Hungary and Great Britain comprised the remaining slots of the top 5 countries 2 years ago.
Just one European Record bit the dust in Glasgow, represented by Greek swimmer Andreas Vazaios’ new result of 1:50.85 in the men’s 200m IM.
In terms of multiple gold medals earned in individual events, Russians Vlad Morozov and Kliment Kolesnikov led the way with a trio of wins each. Morozov topped the men’s podiums in the 50m free, the 100m free and 50m breast, while Kolesnikov came out on top of the men’s 50m back, 100m back and 100m IM.
Hungarian Katinka Hosszu dominated the women’s side of the house, with the Olympian catching gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m IM races, as well as the 200m fly.
As a reminder, the ISL play-off season begins on November 11th and runs through November 28th, giving European swimmers time to compete here in Kazan.
