Arizona State isn’t releasing full results of its Friday intrasquad meet, which was the team’s first competition after redshirting the entire team for the 2020-2021 COVID-19 season.
A few key results have leaked out, though, from interested alumni, including the times of the team’s top freshman recruit Leon Marchand swimming in his first career collegiate or short course yards meet.
The versatile 19-year old, who finished 6th in the 400 IM at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, opened up his career on a sprintier note in the 100-yard focused event.

While none of those times individually will make any national noise yet, the range across them, not even his specialty distances, shows off his potential for the Sun Devils this season.
He’ll be seeking to enter a very crowded and very exciting men’s 400 IM field at the NCAA Championship meet that includes defending NCAA Champion Bobby Finke of Florida, the #1 ranked long course swimmer in the world last season (but non-Olympian) Carson Foster of Texas, and the fastest swimmer at last year’s NCAA Championships, out of the B Final, Hugo Gonzalez of Cal.
SwimSwam reached out to Arizona State for full results of the meet, but Sun Devil coaches said that they weren’t sharing intrasquad results (though the school publicized the meet with a preview). The men’s team’s first official meet of the season won’t be until Saturday, November 6, when they host the USC Trojans. The women will have meets on the road against Washington State on October 16 and at home against UCLA on November 5.

Of particular note on Marchand was his quick adaptation to short course skills, much like Gonzalez when he burst onto the American scene for Auburn at SECs a few years back, which is commonly difficult for young Europeans who have tasted significant LCM success. He several times came off walls gaining a 2-3 foot margin in his underwaters, on national scoring athletes, even without 15 meter violations.
CLARIFICATION ON ASU SCHEDULE: The 11/6/21 USC meet is the first official competition for the ASU men, but their women have two CONFERENCE meets before that, facing Washington State in Pullman on 10/16/21 and UCLA in a Home meet in Tempe on Friday, 11/5/21, the day before the co-ed USC meet.
