Thomas Leads the way in both the 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle

Noemie Thomas of the UBC Dolphins took top spot in both the 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle finals on the second day of the Mel Zajac Junior International. Thomas, who will be swimming the 100 butterfly at the 2013 World Championships, was the only women to go under one minute posting a time of 59.16. She was followed by King Aquatic Club’s Hannah Weiss who recorded a 1:02.99 and Florida’s Natalie Hinds who qualified third in a time of 1:03.01.

In the 50 freestyle Thomas qualified in a time of 26.55, eight one-hundredths of a second ahead of Hinds who will be going into tonight’s final in second position touching in a time of 26.63. Team Alberta’s Paige Kremer qualified third in a time of 27.01.

Ryan Lochte cruised into the finals in both of his events with very little effort. Lochte qualified first in the 200 IM posting a 2:07.87, which is almost seven seconds slower than his season’s best of 2:00.98 that he posted at the Austin Grand Prix in January. He was followed by the University of Calgary’s Gleb Suvorov who recorded a 2:08.33 and UBC Dolphins’ Luke Reilly who touched in a time of 2:08.42.

Lochte qualified third in a time 50 backstroke in a time of 27.10. Suvorov led the way in the event qualifying in a time of 26.73, one one-hundredth of a second ahead of his cross town rival Russell Wood of the Cascade Swim Club who qualified in a time of 26.74.

The University of Calgary’s Fiona Doyle, who recently broke Irish National records in both the 100 (1:08.23) and the 200 breaststroke (2:31.05), qualified first for tonight’s 200 breaststroke posting a time of 2:33.23. UBC Dolphins’ Tera Van Beilen who finished 15 one-hundredths of a second ahead of Doyle to win the 100 breaststroke on the first night of competition, qualified second in a time of 2:33.66 followed by Liquid Lightning’s Kierra Smith who recorded a time of 2:34.16.

UBC Dolphins’ Coleman Allen qualified with the top time in the 100 butterfly by almost a second and a half touching in a time of 54.67. He was followed by two swimmers from King Aquatic Club Logan Rysemus who posted a 56.23 and 16 year old Mathias Oh who recorded a time of 57.39.

In the women’s 50 backstroke King’s Hannah Weiss qualified first in a time of 29.75 followed by UBC Dolphins’ Lauren Lavigna who qualified second recording a time of 30.22.

14 year old Ingrid Wilm who is representing Team Alberta had a terrific swim, posting a 30.35 to qualify third. Her time is only 21 one-hundredths of a second away from the 13-14 Alberta provincial record.

ESwim’s Brittany MacLean qualified first in the 400 freestyle in a time of 4:20.59. She was followed by Club Wolverine’s Emily Brunemann who recorded a 4:21.39. Brunemann broke the meet record on her way to winning the 1500 freestyle earlier in the meet.

Lindsay Delmar of the University of Calgary qualified third in a time of 4:21.69.

Edmonton Keyano’s Kier Maitland, who won the 800 freestyle last night, qualified first in the 400 freestyle in a time of 4:03.25. He was followed by Island Swimming’s Jeremy Bagshaw who posted a time of 4:04.26 and Hyack’s Stefan Milosevic who finished in a time of 4:05.97.

In the women’s 200 IM Rachel Millet of the University of Idaho took the top position in tonight’s final posting a time of 2:20.66. She was followed by the University of Calgary’s Tianna Rissling who recorded a time of 2:22.23 and Lili Margitai of Team Alberta who qualified third in a time of 2:23.45.

Florida’s Bradley deBorde qualified first in the men’s 50 freestyle in a time of 23.54. He was followed by Carson Brindle of the Multnomah Athletic Club who recorded a time of 24.04 and UBC Dolphins’ Kelly Aspinall who posted a time of 24.07.
