Double Legacy Michael Butler to Swim at Case Western Reserve

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Cleveland, Ohio’s Michael Butler has announced his decision to follow in the footsteps of both his parents and swim at Case Western Reserve University. He will join the class of 2025 with Jasha Heide and Zach Toothman.

“I chose CWRU because of their outstanding academic programs and top notch swimming. I would like to thank Coach Tim and Coach Adam for their help with my swimming career, and special thanks to my teammates.”

Butler is a senior at Hawken School. He swims year-round for Lake Erie Silver Dolphins and has been coached at both Hawken and LESD by Tim Hable, who was his father’s coach at CWRU.

At the 2021 Ohio State OHSAA Boys D2 Swimming and Diving Championships in February, Butler contributed to Hawken’s team title by swimming a leg on the state-champion 400 free relay (48.34) and placing 3rd in the 500 free (4:39.55) and 13th in the 200 free (1:46.18).

In club swimming, Butler favors the longer-distance freestyle and IM events. He went lifetime bests in the 100/500/1650 free in December at the Lake Erie Swimming Winter Championships at Spire, where he won the mile, was runner-up in the 500, and placed 7th and 12 in the 200 free and 100 free, respectively. At Elkhart Sectionals in March, he kicked off long course season with PBs in the 200 free (2:03.13), 400 free (4:13.22), 800 free (8:37.71), and 1500 free (16:34.02).

Best SCY times:

  • 1650 free – 15:59.11
  • 500 free – 4:38.66
  • 200 free – 1:44.92
  • 100 free – 49.64
  • 400 IM – 4:17.97
  • 200 IM – 2:02.36

The NCAA Division III has canceled the last two national championships in a row, owing to the coronavirus pandemic, but it took 15:47.90 in the 1650, 4:31.21 in the 500 free, 1:39.38 in the 200 free, and 3:58.18 in the 400 IM to score at the 2019 NCAA Division III Championships.
