Kasia Wasick and Linnea Mack Duel in the 50 Free in Mission Viejo

Swimmers opened the second prelims session of the 2021 Fran Crippen Swim Meet of Champions with the 50 breaststroke.

Canyon’s Izabella Adame was the only swimmer to break 33.00 on the women’s side. she touched the wall first with a time of 32.24, taking .73 off her entry time. Irvine Novaquatics’ Brian Lou swam the fastest 50 breast on the men’s side (29.15), but added 1.8 to his entry time.

Lou’s teammate Ella Ristic kept her freestyle momentum going (she won the 400 free final last night and placed 2nd in the 100 free final). Ristic, an Indiana rising sophomore, earned the top spot in the 100 free final tonight with a time of 2:02.11, half a second ahead of Longhorn Aquatics’ Remedy Rule.

Gator Swim Club’s Khader Baglah swam the fastest men’s 200 free (1:50.46) and finished with a 1.5 second lead over second place finisher Jorge Iga from Jim Click Team Elite.  Bryan Chavez Team Rebel Aquatics posted a lifetime best time of 1:52.37, taking .17 off his time from March, to place 3rd.

Three swimmers cracked 2:20.00 in the women’s 200 back this morning, lead by TNAQ’s McKenna DeBever (2:18.74), YMCA Westside Silver Fins’  Chloe Isleta (2:19.58) and Riverside Aquatics Association’s Ella Martinez-Spencer (2:19.76). BT for last two, but DeBever added 3.6 seconds to her entry time. DeBever was 3.6 seconds to her entry time, Isleta was about 2 seconds off her lifetime best, while Martinez-Spencer cracked 2:20.00 for the first time.

Her previous lifetime best was 2:20.13 from 2019.

Cal’s Andy Xianyang Song, coming off his win in the 50 back last night, swam the fastest 200 back in prelims (2:01.71). He was closely followed by Schroeder YMCA’s Ziyad Saleem (2:02.67).

Three-time Olympian Kasia Wasick of Team Rebel Aquatics had a tight race with Team Elite’s Linnea Mack in the 50 free, with Wasick taking 1st place by .20 (24.77). Mack took .32 off her entry time and came within .28 of her lifetime best time from the U.S. Olympic Trials last week.

Wasick’s fastest 50 free time is 24.17 from the European Championships in May.

On the men’s side, half a second separated 1st place finisher Gabe Castano (22.20) and TNAQ’s Ryan Coetzee who placed 2nd. Two-time Olympian Vladimir Morozov of Trojan Aquatics took 3rd (22.78).

Teenagers took the women’s 400 IM by storm to end Saturday’s prelims session. 14-year-old Teagan O’Dell posted the fastest time (4:56.83), less than a second off her lifetime best from April, and 16-year-old Kathryn Hazle of North Coast Aquatics placed 2nd with a time of 4:57.96. Earlier, Hazle took 3rd in the 200 free (2:04.86).

Aggie Swim Club’s Hector Ruvalcaba Cruz dominated the men’s 400 IM prelims race, touching the wall first with a time of 4:20.49 and a 6 second lead over the field.
