The 2021 Tennessee Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association State High School Swimming and Diving Championships took place this weekend but due to the pandemic, the events were held at four different locations and spread out over Saturday and Sunday, April 24 and 25 to respect COVID-19 protocols. The entire diving competition was held at The Ensworth School on Saturday, April 17.

The Baylor School won their second consecutive boys state title with 338 points. After tying for first place with McCallie School in 2020, the Red Raiders used their depth to win by 68 points this year. They benefited from strong performances by freshman Drew Hitchcock and sophomores Charlie Han and Sam Flack. Hitchcock won the 200 IM with 1:49.49, a 2-second improvement from his lifetime best of 1:51.47 from 18&U Championships in December 2020. Hitchcock also went a best time, breaking the 50-second barrier for the first time, en route to winning the 100 fly with 48.84. He added more points to Baylor’s team score with legs on the winning 400 free relay (45.76) and runner-up 200 medley relay (23.76 leadoff backstroke).

Han won the 100 breast with a massive 55.69. It was only his sixth sub-minute performance in the event, and he undercut his previous PB by 2.02 seconds. He also contributed the breaststroke leg (25.27) to the runner-up 200 medley relay, and placed 8th in the 200 IM (1:56.79). Flack won the 500 free (4:26.80), was 3rd in the 200 IM (1:52.81), swam the fastest leg (45.74) on the Baylor School’s winning 400 free relay, and clocked the second-fastest leg (20.98) on the runner-up 200 free relay.

Another multiple event winner was McCallie School junior Sam Powe, who set a meet record in the 100 back (47.17) and won the 200 free (1:38.03). He also led off the winning 200 medley relay (22.14 backstroke) and third-place 400 free relay (45.39).

Knox Area Homeschool freshman Bennett Greene broke the meet record in 1-meter diving with 575.25 points. Coming in behind him with 449.30 points for second place was his older brother Jackson Greene, a junior.

Montgomery Bell Academy senior Jack Flanagan was the sprint free king, winning both the 50 free (20.47) and the 100 free (44.70) and leading off the state-champion 200 free relay (20.49). Flanagan recently committed to swim for Tennessee next year. His teammate, sophomore Oliver Pilkinton, was runner-up in the 100 free (45.17) and the 100 fly (49.15).
