ORANGE, Calif. – In its second match of the season, the Chapman University women’s water polo defeated visiting Redlands 10-7. Junior Charlene Ma scored three times and sophomore Sophie Salstrom made 15 saves to key the victory.

The two teams were meeting just two weeks after Redlands pulled out a heartbreaking victory with the game-winning goal in the final minute. Chapman returned the favor with a more decisive victory to split the season series/

The Bulldogs jumped on top early with two goals in the opening minute of play. However, Chapman settled in and scored six of the next seven goals to take a 6-3 lead early in the third quarter. Ma’s first goal put Chapman on the board and freshman Leighanne Estabrook tied the match at 2-2 just 39 seconds later.

Redlands struck again before Estabrook’s second goal again tied the match just before the end of the first quarter. Salstrom and the Panther defense engaged in a tight, defensive struggle in well-played second quarter and won the battle to take a 4-3 lead into halftime. Freshman Francesca Snyder‘s goal gave the Panthers their first lead.

Chapman continued on its run in the third with goals from freshman Kasey Markell and sophomore Camille Chiang to build the 6-3 lead. Redlands responded with back-to-back goals to pull within early in the fourth but Chapman pulled away late as Salstrom locked Redlands out over the final four-and-a-half minutes while the offense continued building the lead.

Chapman will next face Concordia on Thursday before ending the regular season with matches against Cal Lutheran on consecutive weeks.

The University of Redlands women’s water polo faced Chapman University in a road match on Saturday morning but came home with a 7-10 loss to the Panthers.  After a 3-3 first-quarter tie, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foes battled it out in a tight contest, with Chapman gaining just enough cushion late in the game.

Redlands jumped out to a 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals from junior attacker Holly Kvanvig (Beaverton, OR) in the first minute of action. However, Chapman answered back with a pair of scores to even the tally by the 3:19-mark.  Senior attacker Katelynn Holloman (Wildomar, CA) put the Bulldogs in front on a five-on-six advantage with 39 seconds to go in the opening frame.  But Chapman scored the equalizer late in the frame to send the teams into the second all tied at three apiece.

A defensive heavy quarter resulted in multiple steals and a slight 4-3 Chapman lead by halftime.

The Panthers came out firing in the third to go up 6-3, before senior attackers Sarah Draves (Fallbrook, CA) and Kelly Klish (Glenview, IL) cut the deficit to one by the midway point of the stanza.

Despite two Bulldog goals by sophomore attacker Katrina Nielsen (Houston, TX), Chapman managed to keep Redlands at bay in the final two quarters.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tori Zielinski (Sunnyvale, CA) provided nine saves in a full-game effort between the posts.

Redlands (1-2) heads to Cal Lutheran University on Saturday, April 17, for an 11 a.m. match against the Regals.
