High school senior Lauren Wisdom, from Bloomington, Illinois, will stay close to home and attend Illinois State University next fall. It’s less than a 10-minute drive from the campus of her Central Catholic High School to the campus of Illinois State.
Wisdom is a traditional 400 IM/200 fly/500 freestyle middle-distance specialist. Capable swimmers can rack up big points in these races at mid-major conference meets like the Missouri Valley Championships, where often these races aren’t very deep.
Illinois State did well in these specialties last season. Then-senior Kierston Farley-Sepe swept the conference titles in the 400 IM and 200 fly, and Haley Rivera was 2nd in the 200 fly and 4th in the 400 IM.
In the 500 free, on the other hand, the Redbirds struggled last season, scoring 0 points at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship meet. Illinois State placed 4th overall out of 8 teams at that meet, while the conference champions Missouri State finished 1-2-3-5 in the 500 free

Wisdom was one of the top-ranked age groupers in the country earlier in her swimming career, ranking as high as 19th among 11-12s in the 500 free in 2016.
In high school, she’s swum a few best times recently in the 200 fly and 400 IM, though many of her best times are still from middle school.
Wisdom’s best time in the 200 fly would have put her in the B final at last year’s MVC Championship meet, and her best time in the 400 IM would have placed her high in the B final at that meet as well.
Wisdom trains with the Bloomington Waves/Normal YMCA Swim Team.
