The final night of competition at the South American Youth Championships was the only evening that saw less than two championship records broken.
Brazilian Pedro Cardona was the lone breaker on the evening setting a new championship mark in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:02.99.
“This competition was very good for me to gain international experience,” said Cardona.
“In today’s race I swam well in the first 50 meters and came back strong to achieve break the record. I knew it would be difficult, but I believed all the time.”
The Brazilians walked away with the top spot in the championships with 732 points with Venezuela second with 424 points and Argentina third with 145 points.
The Brazilians won 74 medals in 2011, the last time the competition was held, this time around they took home 73, but with 8 more gold and 4 more silver.
Brazilian coach Fernando Vanzella was very pleased with what the swimmers were able to accomplish, “The work was done well, the result was great and they are to be congratulated!” said Vanzella.
